Product Description

A new novel by the USA Today and Wall Street Journal bestselling author of The Breathing Series . . .

What if you had a second chance to meet someone for the first time?
Cal Logan is shocked to see Nicole Bentley sitting across from him at a coffee shop thousands of miles from their hometown. After all, no one has seen or heard from her since they graduated over a year ago.

Except this girl isn't Nicole.

She looks exactly like Cal's shy childhood crush, but her name is Nyelle Preston and she has no idea who he is. This girl is impulsive and daring, her passion for life infectious. The complete opposite of Nicole. Cal finds himself utterly fascinated-and falling hard. But Nyelle is also extremely secretive. And the closer he comes to finding out what she's hiding, the less he wants to know.

When the secrets from the past and present collide, one thing becomes clear: Nothing is what it seems.

NEW BONUS epilogue, author interview, book club guide and more.

This book was beyond good, I don't have the words to describe it, but it had it all. The friendships, the build up to the relationship, the sorrow, the mystery..I couldn't stop reading...loved it and highly recommend it.

HASH(0xa36bf150) out of 5 stars Beautifully written Sept. 15 2014

I really don’t think I have ever been nervous about writing a review for a book before…not until NOW. What If is…well, I just feel like I seriously don’t know what I can say about this book and depending on how much I say it could spoil the story. And I SO don’t want to do that. Maybe I can just say that it was a life experience, or a life (or lives) experienced through the words of Rebecca Donovan. This best selling author has done an amazing job yet again.

A little about the story: So I don’t really like going into a complete rehash of the synopsis of the story so if you want that official summary please check it out on GR or Amazon (or other seller’s) website. And don’t forget that you can also sample it before you buy it. This is a NA story in the male POV. The main character is Cal but there are many characters that the story follows. The main ones are Nyelle, Rae, Richelle, and Nicole. Cal meets Nyelle and immediately he knows her, or at least he thinks he does. She is from his past…but is she really? What If…

What I loved: There is no better story than one that literally engulfs your senses. This story is one that you truly experience with the characters. I didn’t go back to reading each time just to find out what happens next; I went back to experience their journey with them. The interactions between Cal and Nyelle were effortless. She was such a free spirit living her life to the fullest. “Live the life you want, not the one you’re given.” That is on Rebecca’s What If website and I absolutely love it. I think it fits Nyelle perfectly.

I also loved the ordering of the book and the multiple layers upon which the story builds. You get flashbacks throughout from all the main characters, past and present. You truly get to know all of the characters. I absolutely fell in love with all of them. This story is truly remarkable. Such a footprint Rebecca leaves with her novels. Never to be forgotten in my opinion.

What I didn’t love so much: Well, seeing as I gave this 5 stars you would think there wasn’t anything that I didn’t love. Well, unfortunately the thing that I didn’t love as much was the predictability. I don’t know if it was just me but at some point all the pieces came together and I knew what was going to happen. Or what did happen. Maybe to others it was a complete shock but to me, not so much. Did that take away from the story? ABSOLUTELY NOT!!! I just have to list the good with the not as good (definitely not going to say bad there). :-)

Favorite Quotes:

“There are so many times I think about a decision I’ve made and wonder, ‘What if I had done it differently? Who would I be? What would my life be like? What if…?’”

“I’ve never seen so many stars before,” she says quietly. A sky full of possibilities and pain. That’s such a contradiction. Maybe they’re just painful possibilities”

“What about the shooting stars?” Nyelle turns her head with a jerk at the sound of my voice like she forgot I was beside her. “You wish on them, for another chance to get it right.”

Parting words:

This story is inspiring and if you haven’t checked out her What If movement on her website it is a MUST. Gets you truly thinking, “What If?” I had the pleasure of assisting Rebecca at a book event and I find her to be one of the happiest and most inspiring people. Her personality truly shines through in her writing. Absolutely stunning.

HASH(0xa36bf39c) out of 5 stars Disappointment Sept. 23 2014

The breathing series written by this author were some of my favorite reads. So with a sad heart I write this review. This story was slow, boring, frustrating and most importantly disconnected. The characters in particular were flat, unlikable and weird. Nicole was frustrating, her behaviour was extreme if it was caused by her childhood. There was So much wasted time and unresolved feelings between the friends. Richelle was too young to have the mind to handle things the way she did with her friends. It wasn't believable in my opinion. Cal was too wimpy and too patient and too accommodating and too understanding and too no questions asked because I don't want to scare you off kind of guy. He was just there waiting to be acknowledged or accepted by this weird girl who really didn't have anything to offer but weirdness .......maybe I was expecting more like the author previous work which was amazing. This sadly wad hard to finish.

HASH(0xa36bf360) out of 5 stars Aghast! Sept. 27 2014
By Book Nerd - Published on
Format: Kindle Edition
You know there comes a time when you read a book and while you're reading and even when you're done you ask yourself "What the Ef did I just read?!" Le Sigh this just happens to be one of those books, now don't get me wrong in the beginning I'm all in this book once we realize that Nicole has dropped off the face of the earth. Then we also know that something horrid had to have happen to cause her to do it. We had a big build up for a HUGE let down! Like Nicole's reasoning for running away and no longer being friends with everyone was STUPID! You think that something tragic happen like she was beaten, raped, tortured, and etc but NO! Nicole simply was angry and tired of being who everyone wants her to be! Yep, that's it that's the fricking reason. Oh yeah! Then the little thing with what is going on with Richelle. *rolls eyes*

Then when you find out what actually ended up happening to Richelle, you're left starting at your Kindle, flipping it over, and looking around the room hoping something you see makes sense; because it sure as heck doesn't in this book. I meant the author was even giving clues that Nicole's mother was physically abused by her father but NO she isn't! Like why feed us these bullcrap hints and not let that be the case? It's like telling me all day that you have a birthday gift for me and it's something with 4 wheels, I can drive it, that requires something to be inserted before it will move, a steering wheel, and has a horn to press to alert people to get out the way. So you know you're getting a car right! WRONG! You walk outside and see a fricking kiddie ride that requires quarters. To say I was disappointed with this book is an understatement, to be fed certain ideas of what happen to Nicole to find out that she really just fell off her bike and scrapped her knee AND she isn't bleeding from the fall. Of course that isn't what happens but that's the equivalent to what the truth is. Please save your money and don't buy this book it's only borrow worthy and saying that is pushing it.

HASH(0xa36bf858) out of 5 stars Did I read the same book as everyone else??? Oct. 1 2014

Did I read the same book as everyone else? Based on all the 5 star reviews, and the very few one or two star reviews, I really had high hopes for this book. However, I have not been this disappointed in a book in a long time. The entire time you're hoping that there is something that will cause all of the pages before to make sense. But really, it was all just a waste of time. Nyelle's personality felt forced, and really I honestly thought she had some sort of mental illness (maybe split personality) but was just stupidity. I really hate to give bad reviews because I think every book has some sort of redeeming quality, but right now I am just so frustrated with this book. I suggest you spend your cash on something else.

HASH(0xa36bf6f0) out of 5 stars Rebecca Donovan has done it AGAIN!! Sept. 16 2014
By BeazerB - Published on
Format: Kindle Edition
I do have to preface this review by saying this...I began reading, like a maniac, 2 years ago. One of the first series I ever read was The Breathing Series by Rebecca Donovan. I have ALWAYS suggested books to friends. I have to say, I ALWAYS recommend The Breathing Series. So that being said, when I was given the opportunity to read this book, prior to it's release, I just about wept. I find Rebecca Donovan's writing entrancing. She captivates her readers and hooks them in. So with that being is my review.

This book could possibly be my favorite read of the year! Rebecca has taken a few characters from their childhood to adulthood and brought you into their friendship, heart aches, and turmoil that is their lives.

Rae, Richelle and Cal, friends since they were practically babies. The June before fourth grade, Nicole moves in next door to Richelle. The quartet become instant friends.

Nicole, however, has a little different life than the other kids in the neighborhood. Her father rules with an iron fist, her mother is stuck in the 1950's, meeting her husband at the door with his slippers and pipe. While Nicole is expected to be the perfect little girl. Not to get dirty, to be home waiting on her father's arrival. It's a weird scenario for the other kids but Richelle takes Nicole under her wing and allows Nicole to just be "one of the guys".

"Go clean up and change before your father gets home...we're supposed to make him happy, not disappointed in us."

Their friendship blossoms we are able to see their friendship grown as they get older. They need each other.

Their relationships change over the years but the What if's are still there. Once away at college, Cal has become quite the ladies man. He meets this unique, quirky girl named Nyelle who captures his interest. But Cal can't keep track of her. She just shows up every once in a while but she's a force to be reckoned with and Cal is captivated by her."

"I am looking for the girl I'll regret if I let her go."

I found Nyelle to be a refreshing character who made me laugh, more than once. That's one of the great things about this book, is that there is humor throughout the book, which made me love it even more.

"Why do you call it the frosting tree?

She thrusts her arm, elbow-deep, into her jacket pocket and pulls out a tub of vanilla frosting.

"I like to have something sweet while, I am thinking."

We all have those What If moments. This book is riddled with What If moments and that is what makes it so true to life.

Rebecca has taken this story, told it in a few different characters point of view, has woven a story with twists and turns. She has such a unique way of capturing your attention, from page one and keeping you intertwined with these characters, it's brilliant.

This story is so unique and different than most of the books out there today. I love a good "alpha male/bad boy falls in love with an innocent girl" book every once in a while, but this book will have you thinking about life and YOUR What if's. It's such a refreshing change from the norm in the book world right now. (Not that I don't like those books because believe me, I do!)

I need to thank Rebecca Donovan for once again, making me absolutely obsessed with a book!

This book was emotionally brutal, smile inducing and a belly laughing sweet story that spans years. You will want to read this book again, immediately after you finish. I guarantee, it's a different read the second time around.

I give this book 5 stars and I would give it more if possible.
