Review

"[A] useful and important new book...it demonstrates [Rae's] deep knowledge of the major public-policy challenges of our time and a coherent philosophical approach." (Globe and Mail)

“In What’s Happened to Politics?, Rae raises a key question that all Canadians need to contemplate. Part history, part memoir, and part manifesto, it is important for anyone who cares about Canada and how it’s governed.” (Alison Loat, co-founder of Samara Canada)

What’s Happened to Politics? aspires to open a conversation with Canadians on the state of our politics and government. It is a call to action to change the focus from rhetoric and spin to political decision-making based on shared values, ideas, and character. This book also focuses on the urgent need to reconcile the relationship between Aboriginal people and other Canadians and underscores the historic imbalance in the relationship, how it came about, and the way forward in terms that all Canadians can understand.” (Phil Fontaine, President, Ishkonigan Consulting and Mediation Inc. & three-time National Chief of the Assembly of First Nations)

"This is an excellent book. It’s solidly rooted in experience... but very much focused on the future. It’s a highly personal political-intellectual memoir, but one that’s not at all self-indulgent. " (Roland Paris, Director of the Centre for International Policy Studies)

Good book part history lesson on Canada and the worlds past and what has to change in the future to have the moderate views that Rae brings to the forefront take effect in Canada. He begins the book with talk about his father in the Fabian society and polls and the crux of the book can be seen in his chapter on leadership. There is not much good he saw in the leadership of the Harper conservatives he does not criticize so much he is just silent which speaks a thousand words. The chapter on aboriginal peoples although he brings up some valid points regarding treaties signed he fails to mention the problem aboriginal females faced in the deaths they've faced the past 20 years. He is just silent about the issues of justice on the reserves. He ends the discussion on Canada's place in the world and here we can go back to the harper regime and its failure to present a fair and just face to the world instead of one that is taking sides. On the whole he would see hope in the election of Justin trudeau's liberals but time will tell whether TRudeau is able to right all wrongs and correct the wrong turn which Canada has undergone the last 10 years under prime minister Harper's watch. I see the book as an indictment of and criticism of the Harper agenda in all ways and what needs to be done to bring young people back into the interest of modern day politics where they now seem excluded. Good read.

An easy read with cogent thoughts and anecdotes sprinkled throughout the text. Bob Rae is intuitive and knowledgeable and those attributes come through loud and clear. An impressive little book that deserves being read by anyone even remotely interested in the "history" and "science" of politics, especially the Canadian political scene.

Rae is a very, very good writer. Straightforward, easy to read and understand. Nicely broken up into chapters. And, experienced politician that he is, he gives an unvarnished opinion of where it's gone wrong ... the history ... the 'story'. And then poses the kinds of questions we should be asking of our leaders/potential leaders ... demanding the answers to get politics in Canada back on track.

After all those years in politics he writes this book. Why didn't he do something when he was in power? He should look in the mirror to see 'What's Happened to Politics!'

Hard to put down; disappointingly brief. Tries to steer clear of digs at politicians currently active. Mostly succeeds in contextualizing the hard right as missing opportunities to serve better rather than blaming them for being mean spirited. Offers hope for a return to respect for people of good will in public service.
