Praise for When the Heart Cries

“As a native of Lancaster County, born and raised among Amish and Mennonite neighbors, I began reading When the Heart Cries with some trepidation. My concerns were quickly put aside: Cindy Woodsmall’s research is thorough, and Hannah Lapp’s Amish voice rings true. Her story is both touching and tragic, yet hope shines through every page-turning chapter. A moving and meaningful first novel.”
–Liz Curtis Higgs, best-selling author of Grace in Thine Eyes

“Reaching deep into the heart of the reader, Cindy Woodsmall pens a beautifully lyrical story in her debut novel When the Heart Cries. She paints a vivid backdrop of Amish and Mennonite cultures with fascinating detail and memorable clarity. Fans of this genre will be thrilled to discover this new author, and I look forward to the next book in the Sisters of the Quilt series.”
–Tamera Alexander, bestselling author of Rekindled

“What a vibrant, strong, emotional story! When the Heart Cries will grip you and not let go, I promise. Highly recommended!”
–Gayle Roper, author of Allah’s Fire and the Seaside Seasons series

When the Heart Cries is a story of tragedy and strength when an Amish girl’s life is struck with the horror of reality. A powerful first novel.”
–DiAnn Mills, author of Leather and Lace and When the Lion Roars

When the Heart Cries is a compelling and moving beginning to what promises to be a great new series. Cindy Woodsmall’s characters wrapped themselves around my heart and wouldn’t let go.”
–Deborah Raney, author of A Vow to Cherish and Remember to Forget

Praise for the Sisters of the Quilt Series

“Woodsmall’s fantastic second book in the Sisters of the Quilt series continues the story of Hannah Lapp. Keep the tissues nearby — Hannah’s tale will tug hard at the heartstrings. Readers will find themselves cheering Hannah on through her ordeals and hating to put the book down.”
–Romatic Times

“Cindy Woodsmall writes real--real people, real conflicts, real emotions. When you open her book, you enter her world and live the story with the characters.”
–Kim Vogel Sawyer, author of Where Willows Grow and Waiting for Summer’s Return

When Morning Comes is a fine rendering of struggle and joy that resonates long after the last words are read.”

From Booklist

Woodsmall's Amish heroine is naive Hannah Lapp, who, as the novel begins, accepts the marriage proposal of her childhood friend, Paul Waddell. But Paul is a Mennonite--and, almost worse, a college man. He embraces such corrupt modernisms as gasoline engines and the Internet. To outsiders, the differences between Amish and Mennonites may seem subtle, but that's not the case for Hannah's Old Order father, and all hell breaks loose. Woodsmall's first novel, which will more than likely beget a series, seems a worthy successor--or companion--to Beverly Lewis' popular stories of the Pennsylvania Amish.

Format: Paperback Verified Purchase
Hannah Lapp is the seventeen year old daughter of an Old Order Amish family. She lives with her family in a gray stone farm home in Owl's Perch in Perry County, Pennsylvania.

Paul Waddell is a twenty-one year old Mennonite man, a college student in his final year. He plans on becoming a social worker. He spends summers working on his grandmother's farm. Hannah, too, works on his grandmother's farm. It was there they met. After three years of dating and hiding it from Hannah's parents, Paul proposes marriage, since he will be returning to school and he won't be seeing her. Hannah accepts Paul's proposal knowing that her family will avoid her for the rest of her life. Hannah hopes that Paul can win her family over by working for free on her father's farm.

Hannah is rebelling against the stifling lifestyle of the Old Order Amish Tradition. She is tempted by the freedom of the Modern World, electricity, computers, the internet, cars and a higher education.

Hannah's father is very strict. She was born into an Amish family and it is God's will that she join the Amish faith. The Amish and the Mennonites are two different faiths and are forbidden to marry. The Old Order Amish forbids higher education, dresses in "plain clothes", forbids the use of electricity and rides in horse-drawn buggies.

The Mennonites are more tolerant of the outside world and technology. They accept higher education. However, they too believe in cape dresses and prayer "Kapps" (caps) for the women.

On the evening of the engagement, the unthinkable happens. Tragedy Strikes. Hannah faces losing everything. What happens next to Hannah, her family and her fiance Paul? Does her family disown her? Does her relationship last? Does her entire life change?

Story Description:

When Hannah dares to love across the boundaries of tradition, will she lose everything?

Despite being raised in a traditional Old Order Amish family, seventeen-year-old Hannah Lapp desires to break with custom, forgo baptism into the faith, and marry outside the cloistered community. She's been in love with Mennonite Paul Waddell for three years, and before returning to college for his senior year, Paul asks Hannah to be his wife. Hannah accepts, aware that her marriage will change her relationship with her family forever.

On the evening of their engagement, tragedy strikes and in one unwelcome encounter, all that Hannah has known and believed is destroyed. As she finds herself entangled in questions that the Old Ways of her people cannot answer, Hannah faces the possibility of losing her place in her family, in her community- and in the heart of the man she loves.

When the Heart Cries is book one in the Sisters of the Quilt series.

My Review:

Hannah Lapp is 17-years-old and she yearns to be "as modern as personal computers and the internet". Freedom beckoned to her, but so did her relatives.

Hannah is Amish and is in love with Paul Waddell who is a Mennonite. Today is his last day at his Grandmother's farm as he's returning for his fourth year at college. All Hannah would have of Paul during the fall, winter and spring would be his letters which he mails via his Grandmother's house. Hannah's father would end their friendship immediately if he ever found out about it as the Amish and Mennonites don't mix. Paul was getting a degree in social work.

Paul asks Hannah to marry him and she accepts.

What a great book! I don't want to give it away, but the last few chapters I sat and cried so hard I felt as though I was going through the heartbreak myself. She really made you feel as though you were right there feeling along with the characters. I almost forgot for a moment that these characters aren't real and I'm not really Amish. :) Great read! I've started the 2nd one already and can't wait to read more!

I really enjoyed this book. This author writes in a way that is not as predictable as many other authors are which kept me reading to find out what happens. Well written and in such a way you feel you are right there in the setting. I felt many emotions throughout reading it,even tears. If you have an interest in the Amish community you will find this book compelling. I recommend it.
