BARBARA LAMBERT is a writer and textile designer. Her previous work includes A Message for Mr. Lazarus (2000) and The Allegra Series (1999). She is a finalist for the Ethel Wilson Prize and the Journey Prize, and is awinner of theDanutaGleed Award for Best First Collection of Short Fiction and the Malahat Review Novella Prize. Lambert has lived in Vancouver, Ottawa, and Barbados, and now resides in Penticton, BC.

Suspicion hangs over everyone including the locals because of the black market in ancient artifacts. Like all good novels, the subtext is one of Clare's own development. If she were to stop pretending "She glimpsed a splayed faceless flattened figure, like those outlines drawn on sidewalks after a shooting." As she digs further into the muddy earth she simultaneously digs into her own muddy secrets and learns lessons about who is the victim and on whom the shame should fall. Clare has made a name for herself for her beautiful botanical paintings of exotic flowers, both in the Amazon and now in Italy, but when she finds herself with painter's block she struggles to find what is causing the loss. Of course there are men aplenty to aid her, and with her good looks, intelligence, and quirky behaviour the men vie for her attention.Read more ›
