Review

“Riveting . . . finely drawn . . . The Whistler centers on an elaborate conspiracy involving an Indian reservation, an organized crime syndicate and a crooked judge skimming a small fortune from the tribal casino’s monthly haul.”The New York Times Book Review

“A main character who’s a seriously appealing woman . . . a whistle-blower who secretly calls attention to corruption . . . a strong and frightening sense of place . . . Grisham’s on his game.”—Janet Maslin, The New York Times

“A fascinating look at judicial corruption . . . an entirely convincing story and one of Grisham’s best. I can’t think of another major American novelist since Sinclair Lewis who has so effectively targeted social and political ills in our society. In Grisham’s case, it is time at least to recognize that at his best he is not simply the author of entertaining legal thrillers but an important novelistic critic of our society. In more than 30 novels, he has often used his exceptional storytelling skills to take a hard look at injustice and corruption in the legal world and in our society as a whole.”—Patrick Anderson, The Washington Post

“Grisham's latest involves the rich and powerful and an abuse of the justice system. Grisham novels are crowd-pleasers because he knows how to satisfy readers who want to see injustice crushed, and justice truly prevails for those who cannot buy influence.”Associated Press

“Grisham has become an institution. For more than 25 years now he’s been our guide to the byways and backwaters of our legal system, superb in particular at ferreting out its vulnerabilities and dramatizing their abuse in gripping style. He excels at describing injustice and corruption.  Grisham’s legal knowledge is impressive, and his ability to convey it unparalleled in popular fiction.”USA Today

Product Description

From John Grisham, America’s #1 bestselling author, comes the most electrifying novel of the year, a high-stakes thrill ride through the darkest corners of the Sunshine State.

We expect our judges to be honest and wise. Their integrity and impartiality are the bedrock of the entire judicial system. We trust them to ensure fair trials, to protect the rights of all litigants, to punish those who do wrong, and to oversee the orderly and efficient flow of justice.
But what happens when a judge bends the law or takes a bribe? It’s rare, but it happens.
Lacy Stoltz is an investigator for the Florida Board on Judicial Conduct. She is a lawyer, not a cop, and it is her job to respond to complaints dealing with judicial misconduct. After nine years with the Board, she knows that most problems are caused by incompetence, not corruption.
But a corruption case eventually crosses her desk. A previously disbarred lawyer is back in business with a new identity. He now goes by the name Greg Myers, and he claims to know of a Florida judge who has stolen more money than all other crooked judges combined. And not just crooked judges in Florida. All judges, from all states, and throughout U.S. history.
What’s the source of the ill-gotten gains? It seems the judge was secretly involved with the construction of a large casino on Native American land. The Coast Mafia financed the casino and is now helping itself to a sizable skim of each month’s cash. The judge is getting a cut and looking the other way. It’s a sweet deal: Everyone is making money.
But now Greg wants to put a stop to it. His only client is a person who knows the truth and wants to blow the whistle and collect millions under Florida law. Greg files a complaint with the Board on Judicial Conduct, and the case is assigned to Lacy Stoltz, who immediately suspects that this one could be dangerous.
Dangerous is one thing. Deadly is something else.

Another solid story line by John Grisham. This time the protagonist is a woman who works in the BJC. This is the government bureau that investigates judges who break the rules. Lacy Stoltz and her partner Hugo meet with the mysterious Ramsey Mix who spins them a tale concerning a sitting judge and the Coast Mafia, which is an organized crime syndicate working in Florida. This syndicate has their finger in all sorts of pies, but primarily receives the skim from an Indian Casino, where money is also laundered. The judge knows the law and greases the wheels to make all things legal happen quickly and with the Coast Mafia's benefit in mind. She already put an innocent man on death row for two murders on their behalf. For this she receives her share of the Indian casino skim. Once Lacy and Hugo convince their boss to follow up on this information the race is on to discover who is behind the Coast Mafia and prosecute the judge for her misconduct. Everyone's life is in danger. The plot is riveting and the suspense is breath catching right up until the Epilogue which wraps up the lose ends to everyone's satisfaction, including mine.

I was really looking forward to this book. But it didn't hold much interest. I wish the story involved more the judge - she was just a bit player in the novel. What is boring about the book is that everything is rushed out near the end - like the author was fed up with the story and just couldn't wait to finish it off. Everything is tied up beautifully with a bow tie. No suspense, no drama, no sense of danger. Everything just worked out perfectly for the good guys with absolutely no hick-ups.

In my opinion The Whistler is one of J. Grisham's best so far. I had two books to read at the same time the other one being the latest Jack Reacher - Night School (Lee Child). I'm a huge fan of Jack Reacher Novels, but for the first time I set it aside to read The Whistler. I was completely taken by the story right from the start and couldn't let go. Too bad one of the main character's had to dye, otherwise the story flows beautifully and logically to its perfect climax.

This book was not the best of Grisham's works. Not as engaging; not the page turner you expect from this author. It is more like a three and a half. I enjoyed it but was anticipation a better read.

Whistler is the story about the investigation of a corrupt judge and a crime syndicate operating a casino and development projects in the Florida Panhandle. The book was somewhat interesting but I did not not feel the story had much body to it. The writing itself was easy reading and basic. I prefer when I am slightly challenged with interesting phrasing, expressions, or terms and vocabulary that I have not heard of before. My overall impression of the story was that it was mediocre.

I've read all of John Grisham's books. Some of them I haven't liked much, others I've liked a lot. I'm happy to say, this one falls in the latter category.

There's lots of suspense and great writing to keep your interest. Grisham's at the top of his game in this book. Highly recommended.

Not one of his better works. He doesn't develop the characters as well as he normally does. The ending is very disappointing. It reads like an article in a newspaper reporting the outcome of a plea agreement or case.

A great expose of a corrupt judge. Because of greed and easy access to the means she was easily used by unsavory elements of society who thrive on bribery of officials. A great summary of how the syndicate was brought down and then sentenced. The love of money can bring bitter consequences and John Grisham portrays that beautifully. A must read if you are a Grisham fan.
