MADONNA Whos That Girl (1987 German 9-track motion picture soundtrack CD album featuring four tracks performed by Madonna - Causing A Commotion The Look Of Love Cant Stop and the title track picture sleeve)

--Amon

the soundtrack to Madonna's movie Who's That Girl, hit record stores in July 1987
Madonna was the biggest star on the planet. Three smash albums in a row and 5 #1 singles. As her fans were buying concert tickets to her Who's That Girl tour, they were awaiting the soundtrack to her new movie.
Who's That Girl the movie was not a box office success, however it was a cute fun wasy to spend 95 minutes. The soundtrack faired better, as 2 of Madonna's 4 songs from the soundtrack were hits. Who's That Girl went to #1 and Causing A Commotion peaked at #2 for 3 weeks.
I have always loved the Who's That Girl era of Madonna. I've seen the movie countless times. The album is total hit and miss. We get three great songs (the two singles plus the UK single The Look Of Love) and one not-so-great song (Can't Stop). However, the low score comes from the other artists. The only non-Madonna cut I like is Michael Davidson's ultra-cheesy SAW produced "Turn It Up".
Unfortunately, neither of the hits off this album have been released on compilations, making this cd somewhat a rarity amongst Madonna fans (as many stores never stock this title).I only recommend it to Madonna diehards, and those who love 1987-era pop. Let's hope WTG and CAC will eventually make a box set or something, both are great "lost" Madonna classics.

Madonna's film career has never really taken off, despite being launched way back in 1985 with Desperately Seeking Susan. In 1987, she starred in the flop film Who's That Girl. The film showed strong promised, but basically flopped worldwide. The soundtrack to the film, however, was the bigger hit of the two and went on to sell 8 million copies worldwide, and includes some pretty big hits. Granted, the soundtrack isn't Madonna's best - I'm Breathless is - but this is a worthy album for any Madonna fan's collection. If you're a Madonna fan and were thinking of purchasing this record without hesitation, beware! The album has only nine songs on it - and only four of those are by Madonna herself. The others are by lesser-known acts such as Duncan Faure, Club Nouveau, Michael Davidson, Scritti Politti and Coati Mundi! Because of this - and because the record says "Madonna" at the top - I will only be reviewing the songs by Madonna...
Who's That Girl starts with the massive UK No.1 single of the same name, Who's That Girl (10/10). It topped the UK chart in July 1987 and was also a US No.1. The song has some fun lyrics and the bassline and beats are very traditional of Madonna's musical style at the time - very upbeat, poppy and fun. Causing A Commotion (10/10) is the next song. Released in September of 1987, the song peaked at No.4 in the UK and was a big hit with audiences at Madonna's "Who's That Girl?" World Tour in 1987. The song has the usual big beats and catchy, funky and melodic beats to groove around to. The Look Of Love (9/10) is another excellent mid-tempo ballad from Madonna, which peaked at No.9 in the UK in December 1987. The lyrics, "No where to run/No where to hide/From the look of love/From the eyes of mine," are not only catchy, but instantly recognisable.

This is an excellent and very interesting soundtrack, and (no secret), essential for Madonna fans. It contains the two US hit singles WHO'S THAT GIRL and the still-irresistable CAUSING A COMMOTION as well as the #9 UK hit ballad THE LOOK OF LOVE and the also good CAN'T STOP. The songs from the other artists are as good as you will probably guess they are, but you may still get a kick out of them. Madonna fans will find themselves flipping to her material mostly, but songs like 24 HOURS and TURN IT UP are pretty good, even though no one knows where Club Nouveau and Michael Davidson are. They could be dead for all we know (of course, we hope not). One good thing about the movie was that it used Madonna's 4 songs very appropriately throughout the movie, they really do fit in with the plot, making this CD an authentic soundtrack to a very good movie. Anyone who saw and liked the movie needs to own this soundtrack, as well as any Madonna fan or lover of mediocre 80's pop.

This was my first soundtrack I ever bought, back in 1987, and I loved it actually I had two copies because the first one wore out. "Who's That Girl", is a good soundtrack, the four Madonna songs are all great, and I also liked the movie. Let's start with the title song, a very innocent side of Madonna, Madonna shows a more sweet side and I love the video. "Who's That Girl", the song is one of Madonna's sweetest. "Causing A Commotion", is a song I could listen to over and over again, it's just an awesome song. Next there is "Can't Stop", which is again very nice to listen to, it's a very dancey tune. And finally there is "The Look Of Love", this a dark and mysterious sounding song, this is one of Madonna's ballads, and in my eyes should've been released as a single. This soundtrack is very good despite what other people say, and a very good buy for my Madonna collection. The album gets a B+.

This was the last Madonna album before her songs began to become more serious. And while I want to say she ended her "fun music" days with a bang, she didn't
Who's That Girl- A very cute and fun song, and her best cut on the album, but it's far from her best. B
Causing A Commotion- It's just as good as the first track, but for some reason I just don't like it as much. I just don't really get the song, I suppose. C+
The Look Of Love- Oh my God. When I first heard this song, I thought it would NEVER end. I could barely listen to it. Not a good slow song by any standards. D-
Can't Stop- It's better than Causing A Commotion, but it's painfully generic, and it seems like Madonna didn't really seem into it. B-
I never listen to the non-Madonna tracks, so I can't give my opinion on them. Buy this album when you have all other Madonna albums. This is not her finest moment.
