Product Description

The League of Rogues takes what they want—but have they taken on too much?

For too long Miss Emily Parr has been subject to the whims of her indebted uncle and the lecherous advances of his repulsive business partner. Her plan to be done with dominating men forever is simple—find herself a kind husband who will leave her to her books.

It seems an easy enough plan, until she is unexpectedly abducted by an incorrigible duke who hides a wounded spirit behind flashing green eyes.

Godric St. Laurent, Duke of Essex, spends countless nights at the club with his four best friends, and relishes the rakish reputation society has branded him with. He has no plans to marry anytime soon—if ever. But when he kidnaps an embezzler’s niece, the difficult debutante’s blend of sweetness and sharp tongue make him desperate for the one thing he swears he never wanted: love.

Yet as they surrender to passion, danger lurks in Godric’s shadowed past, waiting for him to drop his guard—and rob him of the woman he can’t live without.

Warning: This novel includes a lady who refuses to stay kidnapped, a devilish duke with a dark past, and an assortment of charming rogues who have no idea what they’ve gotten themselves into.

Miss Emily Parr is on her way to a ball, when she senses something is not quite right. There is only the driver in the coach besides her, and he looks at her strangely. Unfortunately, she was right: she is kidnapped by men from the League of Rogues. Godric St. Laurent, Duke of Essex, is the one in charge.

Emily’s uncle Albert is heavily indebted to Godric. The Duke intends to repay himself and punish Albert by ruining Emily so she cannot possibly marry. Albert is Emily’s legal guardian and when she marries, her husband will get her money. Albert’s business partner, Mr. Blankenship, wants Emily, has always lusted after her. Blankenship promised Albert to wipe out his debts when he finally gets Emily, who is aghast at the very idea.

The Rogues are keeping Emily hostage, and even though she tried to escape several times, she was unsuccessful. She is resigned to the fact that she is ruined, and she thinks Godric might not be so bad a husband; even though he kidnapped her, he is good looking and definitely in no way as repulsive as Blankenship.

WICKED DESINGS is a wonderful book, great dialogues, fantastic writing, great characters – I loved Ashton! But I had problems with the fact that, even if he kidnapped her, Emily is starting to fall in love with Godric. I can understand desire, sexual attraction; that she would marry him because he ruined her and her only alternative is the horrid Blankenship. But I could not grasp how she could start to like Godric, care for him, let alone love him. He lied to her more than once, he drugged her more than once as well. All the others, mostly Ashton, I could understand; he’s kind to Emily, he’s not the instigator of the whole scheme of which he doesn’t approve. Maybe my sense of romance is warped, but loving Godric?

I received a copy from the author in exchange of a fair and honest review.

As soon as I started reading the first chapter of WICKED DESIGNS, it got me hooked till the very end; I could not put it down and read until late this morning. Lauren Smith didn’t disappoint me with the love story of Godric and Emily! I adored it; the words flew on the pages, a real page turner! It is an amazing story of two tormented young persons, who help each other, trust each other and finally find love in their lives! Miss Emily, is the perfect young lady, being controlled by her uncle and cousin, who desperately need her money. She does not want to marry for money and do not trust men, she only wants her freedom from these two men. Will fate intervene? Her story started with the death of her parents and she fell under these bad men in her family. Godric is an emotionally wounded man; he also belongs to a secret group with his four friends Cedric, Ashton, Charles and Lucien! These rogues are women charmer and Godric is the perfect seducer full of charm and finesse. Their love story starts as Godric, wanting revenge againts one of these men, decides to kidnap Emily in exchange for the money he loss in a financial transaction. As soon as Godric and Emily meet, sparks flare and ignite a sweet tenderness that will evolve, in time, to passion. Beautiful hot chemistry between the captor and the captive! Some scenes are so cute to read, like the scene “when Emily tries to remove the keys from Godric’s wrist while he is sleeping” and “the pond incident” I laughed and smiled, it was so charming to read their adventure. Ms. Smith really wrote a beautiful story filled with tenderness, passion and intrigues. I highly recommend without hesitation, Wicked Designs, her first book in The League of Rogues, and I can’t wait to read her next book in this series; Wicked Seduction, Lucien’s story. I have to say, that Godric’s four friends are devilish and handsome rogues full of charm and tenderness, each, in a different way. I adore reading lives of rogues, they can be so much fun to follow!

This is my first (certainly not my last) Lauren Smith novel. The result of Lauren Smith’s creativity is a well-written story, combining loads of sexual tension, explosive sensual love scenes, witty dialogue, and splashes of intrigue, mystery and suspense.

I was highly entertained with the main characters---Emily Parr; an intelligent, sassy and quick-witted heroine, and Godric St. Lauren; a devilishly handsome, arrogant Duke with a dark past, who has sworn off marriage.

The addition of the hero's friends and fellow rogues adds a lot of flavor to the book as they as well are well-developed---each having their own distinct personality. Hilarity ensues with their banter, point of view, and affectionate interaction with both the hero and heroine.

The book captured my attention from the first page where we are immersed into Emily's kidnapping, and introduced to her wit and quick-thinking. From there, it is a page turning, engrossing story that doesn’t let the reader go until the end of the book.

I looked forward to the scenes between Emily and Godric, especially when Emily faked him and his friends out with her determination to escape the confines of the Duke's estate.

Emily is a refreshing, strong heroine, never coming across as a helpless, damsel in distress even when faced with peril at the hands of a malicious villain.

The hero is flawed, lives by his own rules, and takes what he wants, when he wants it, because he can. He is also charming, has a tenderness that he shields from the world, and is kept on his toes by the heroine which makes his internal angst, conflict and actions all that more fun and interesting to read. I do love a tortured hero, and Godric did not disappoint.
