Review

An Amazon.ca Editors’ Best Canadian Book of 2015

"Fast-paced and profoundly emotional . . . an experience not to be missed." —The Huffington Post

"Rich Terfry is a pretty darn good writer. And Wicked and Weird is an exceptionally satisfying, intermittently edifying, book." —The Globe and Mail

"Entertaining . . . A rollicking memoir about a fascinating guy." —NOW Magazine

"Wicked and Weird is the story of a boy who is born into squalor, poverty and ugliness, but who has inexplicably magical and lofty dreams. The tale that follows is dark, surreal, addictive and quietly redemptive." —Heather O'Neill, award-winning author of Lullabies for Little Criminals

Even if you forego reading the book's forward, which clearly states that readers should digest the stories with a grain of salt, it doesn't take long to realize that 'Wicked and Weird: The Amazing Tales of Buck 65' is a well-crafted mix of truth and fiction. Rich Terfry aka Buck 65 is a master storyteller and his first book does not disappoint. I actually laughed out loud reading this book.

I don't understand the negative comments that have been posted on Amazon regarding this book. I can only surmise that these individuals have some sort of vendetta against the author. It hardly seems like the appropriate platform to be voicing your personal grievances. I strongly suggest that you do not allow these distasteful comments to influence your decision to read this book. You will be missing out on one heck of a great story.

As a few others have already pointed out, it is clear that several of the poor "reviews" listed here are nothing more than adulthood tantrums by those who have personal (and quite possibly imaginary) grievances with the author. And that's fine. But there are better platforms than an online storefront to air out your dirty laundry. Moving on...

The work itself is not flawless, but it is certainly worth your time -- even more so if you are a fan of Buck 65's discography to begin with. I will admit that I was bit surprised by the heavy-handedness of a section or two (mainly because the lyrics in his music are so often concise), but it didn't last long enough to distract from the overall flow of the book. Conversely, some sections could have been given more attention. Even still, my interest has been piqued & I look forward to what other amazing tales Buck has to tell.

But do yourself a favour, fellow consumer... Ignore the reviews that are not Verified Purchasers. Strange times out there.

Sometimes the hand held out is what ends the war...

Rich Terfry, better known as Buck 65, has written an entertaining and heartbreaking book. Part truth and part fiction, anyone who followed his storytelling on Facebook will recognize the reality of growing up in a small town with a mother with a mental illness. His determination to escape Mt. Uniacke creates some out-there adventures, culminating in professional success and disappointments in the music industry told in earnestly, well-crafted prose.

I didn't care for this book. "Wicked and Weird" displays a healthy dose of cliché metaphors and poor attempts of disguising what seems to be a massive ego. A falseness was apparent throughout; I was struck with the impression that the author tried to mimick better works, yet the writing comes across in a very amateur and un-original way.

If you are a fan of his music, you will really enjoy this book! Not sure there are negative reviews calling him a liar when the it is a book of "tales", with a forward warning you as such and has obvious fiction. If everything was true, I'm sure it would be much less entertaining to read. It was interesting to discover where the inspiration for a lot of his music came from and discover how his style of writing connects to his poetry. Even if you are not a fan of his music, this is an engaging read. I thoroughly enjoyed it!

This is a fascinating and ultimately sickening opportunity to explore the delusions of grandeur and compulsive lies that this man seems to have woven for his unfortunate fans and victims. His fabricated reality is masterfully made. I look forward to a follow up publication exposing the less fanciful truth about Terfrys life, and the suffering and damage that his self serving delusions have left behind him.
