Winegard FlatWave Indoor HDTV Antenna
Access free over-the-air channels to watch top-rated shows, live

The Winegard FlatWave Amped Indoor HDTV Antenna's enhanced dual band antenna features a state-of-the-art, ultra-low-noise preamplifier embedded directly at the elements, where 100% of the signal is amplified. The innovative USB power supply provides energy savings by only consuming power while the TV is powered on.

Long Range Amplified Indoor Antenna

The FlatWave Amped offers an extended reception range of up to 50 miles--ideal for smaller communities, or areas where conventional antennas have trouble getting a signal. The revolutionary Clear Circuit technology provides an incredibly low-noise figure of only 1.0dB, letting you receive more channels and minimizing pixelization and dropouts. Dual band reception means you don't miss out on channels that UHF-only antennas can't pick up. Install it in minutes and say goodbye to big monthly cable bills.

Free HDTV Channels

90% of the most-watched TV shows are available on local stations. Why pay for the same programming you can get for free and in high definition with the FlatWave? Many local stations now broadcast in crystal-clear high definition, and also broadcast audio in Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround Sound, giving you the ultimate home theatre experience--but with no monthly bills. No monthly fees, no contract, no installation fees, no credit checks and no cancellation fees. You can save an average of $1,000 per year by switching to FlatWave.

Unbelievably Razor Thin

The FlatWave is less than 2/100 of an inch thick (0.43mm). You won't believe how thin the FlatWave antenna is. Designed with black on one side and white on the other, the FlatWave can be flipped to display the side that best suits your home decor.

In most areas you can receive your local ABC, CBS, FOX, NBC and PBS channels as well as new "digital subchannels" that broadcast 24 hour news, weather, kids programming, and your favorite syndicated shows. This includes 90% of the most watched television shows including programs such as NBC Sunday Night Football, NCIS, Dancing With The Stars, 60 Minutes and more.

In larger markets many other channels are available including 24 hour sports programming, 24 hour classic movie channels, travel and dining networks, 24 hour music channels and more.

While I know that the reception and the number of channels you get is really dependent on your location which in turn may affect your review of a HDTV antenna, I must say that this works great for me! To give you some perspective, I live in the 3rd floor of a brick and mortar 4-storey apt building close to Yonge St and 401 in North York ON with no clear sight of CN tower at all! In spite of this constraint, this thing pulls in a bunch of channels - NBC,CBS, CBC, CTV, PBS, CW23, CBC French, FOX29, Global, OMNI, ION, City TV and a few others! Some of these black out at times, especially NBC and ION, but no complaints at all for all this 'free stuff'!!

Make sure you try placing this at multiple areas in your house/apt to check for where you are getting maximum reception. I was holding it like a kite moving around with it (yeah, the wire is pretty long!!) as I scanned to see where I get maximum channels! The adhesive strips are pretty neat too!

based on amazon reviews, i purchased this Winegard FL5500A FlatWave Amplified Razor Thin HDTV Indoor Antenna, Black/White antenna to try out against my existing $99 TERK Horizon Amplified Indoor HDTV Antenna. what a difference!

from the Ottawa area, all local stations broadcast from the Northwest (Camp Fortune) and Southwest (Manotick).

with the Terk, i receive around 5 viewable channels at a time, and i had to tweak its physical position to receive channels from either broadcast tower.

with this Winegard FL5500A antenna, i receive all available channels (see attached photo) in good signal quality! even with 3 high rise apartments to my north and houses/foliage to my south, i receive uninterrupted signal = non-pixellated HDTV broadcast.

the antenna is flat and slim to hide discreetly behind my living room painting, and the white cable was long enough to blend in the wall surface and corners.

i usually do not write reviews, but this this antenna deserves such praise! the only down side is that the flat antenna is very flexible and unable to stand on its own. i had to McGyver it by attaching paper clips to the included cardboard panel, and then had it stand on the back frame of a painting.

this product is well worth the advertising it boasts with. this definitely is a recommended product!

We are very happy with the Winegard Antenna and decided to “cut the cord” and stop paying $100+ monthly for cable. Couldn’t be easier! 1. Plug the cord in to the TV and wall. 2. Place the antenna in our window aimed towards the CN Tower. 3. Do a scan on the TV to find channels. Bingo! 21 stations of Free TV in Mississauga. (CBC, Global, City TV, etc.) Bye Bye Cable company.

The indoor environment should always be the last resort for placing an antenna for receiving TV signals. Attenuation, blocking and multi-path reflections associated with the indoor environment could create havoc to a TV signal. Your results will pretty much depend on a combination of the immediate environment, the distance from the transmitting tower and the transmission power of the TV channels that you would like to receive. The TVFool website provides a good analysis of what you could expect. Consider that the indoor results from that website are pretty much based on typical setup of a single single dwelling home with only a couple or so light construction walls between the transmitter and the antenna. If the indoor place that you stay is surrounded by multi-story concrete buildings the results will be much MUCH worse.
This FlatWave antenna from Winegard is not cheap and my suggestion is to first run the TVFool analysis for your location. If no channels are printed on a green background then an indoor antenna is not the way to go. If you have some channels on a green background the next step is to borrow an indoor antenna (old bunny ears) and try. If you can receive some UHF signals with the bunny ears then you are in a good spot and you may consider this antenna.
In free space this is one of the better non amplified indoor antennas out there - especially in the UHF band, but it also performs well in the VHF-HI band. It looks good and is well made. The best place to mount any indoor antenna is right against a window facing the transmitting towers and this antenna is ideally constructed for that purpose. If that is not an option you may also have success mounting it on a wall.

As a Mohu Leaf user in Toronto and having a lot of success I opted to go with the seemingly similar Winegard unit to assist a friend in their attempt to "cut the cable".

Generally speaking both units out of the box are similar, however the Winegard's "thin" coax is nice for tucking the cable away under a baseboard.

The WInegard unit generally speaking feels a bit more stiff yet thinner than the Leaf, and in direct sunlight seemingly warmed up a lot quicker.
My advice to users of either is to opt for the black side facing in if you are opting for a window mount.

The double sided tape that came with the Winegard is much more of a pain if you plan to reposition and largely becomes useless after a move or two, I would suggest grabbing a package of double sided foam squares along with the unit. The Leaf came with Velcro and some pins which have seemingly held up after about a half dozen repositions.

In terms of the performance itself;
In ideal conditions in West Toronto I can secure 23 channels in an optimal scan, yet with the WInegard placed in the exact same position it was able to secure 21 channels with the two lost being the channels that seemingly had towers the furthest distance away (Fox & Some sort of Non-Weather Channel Weather Channel).

Either unit still performed far better than any unpowered unit or the Mohu Curve.

For the price difference its not a bad alternative;
