Product Description

Review

“Much of Winning Power is drawn directly from the author’s personal experience and the writing captures this in a way that makes the arguments and accounts immediate and convincing. There is no book like it in Canada and it will be widely read by politics junkies and pundits, candidates and campaigners from all political persuasions.” R. Kenneth Carty, Department of Political Science, University of British Columbia

From local campaigns to central campaign war rooms, this book tells you everything you need to know about Canadian campaigning. Flanagan uses his experience as Harper's campaign manager to explain why he lost the 2004 election and won the next 3 (06', 08' and 11'). He also applies his arguments to provincial politics, the defeat of the Canadian alliance in 2000, and the defeat of the liberals in 2006. Flanagan explains recent trends in Canadian politics like permanent campaigning, the importance of voter data, fundraising, third party (unions) politicking and the use of television advertising, both negative and positive types. He breaks down how campaigns work at the riding level, and national level, explaining what "leaders tours" are, how they are run etc. Great book!!!

Tom Flanagan may be the most articulate of the current practitioners of the political arts. His book is both a highly knowledgeable account of recent electioneering in Alberta and Canada and a handbook of the craft. It makes a serious contribution to any non-insider's understanding of how the political system really works, warts and all. Recommended.

I wanted to get an inside look at the mentality that put Harper in power and the ruthlessness of that enabling. This book did that. It showed the tools and techniques of a party that uses methods I would be embarrassed to admit to, but they didn't bother Steve. All he cares about is winning, and Flanagan helped him. If you want to know what the Alberta thing is all about, here you go.
