So far the four books in this series were published, and the fifth installment is expected later this year.
The main two characters Whit and his younger sister Wisty Allgood will be dragged from their beds by some strange regime soldiers, and accused of being wizard and witch. Unfortunately, when they will try to denial their guilt, Wisty will burst into flame which will lead to a nightmare for all of their closest persons. They will experience persecution, arrests, bizarre convictions, everything ending up with their death sentence.
But even though they do not know what is happening to them and around them, their power will be all the stronger, and in order to save their lives, the other close people and the whole world, they will have to make impossible things, travel into the world of the dead, and join secret resistance who only stands in the way of the leader of this insane regime…
'Witch & Wizard' novel is written for young readers and as such should be evaluated; inside you will not be able to enjoy top literature and unexpected story, but will find what young readers like and seek in books they read - a lot of action, not overly complicated characters and dialogues, few cliffhangers…
What is actually the biggest problem is that the story has a lot more potential than what the authors had delivered; a story about the struggle of the individual against the system in dystopian future as much is widely used provides many opportunities which the authors have not entirely used. Also somehow amazing and unbelievable is the authors' premise that with magical parents, their kids would not know they have magical powers until they were accused for having them and then suddenly their abilities will fully develop and the whole future of the world will rest on their backs.
But as was already written, this is the novel for young people who are unlikely to be so critical and who will certainly enjoy the fast pace and unpretentious easy to read story of brother and sister adventures. And if you recognize yourself belonging to such a group of readers, if you read all the Harry Potter books and want something a bit blacker and hopeless, it is almost certain that you will enjoy 'Witch & Wizard'.
