Enjoyable storyReviewed in the United Kingdom on January 28, 2021
Interesting concept though a little complicated in places. Well written with likeable characters. The historical aspect is very interesting especially the medical references.

Am looking forward to Book 4
When nothing is certain, how do you decide?Reviewed in the United States on March 28, 2020
The Arcane History novels are stunning books, beautifully written, haunting, absorbing, hopeful, heart-rending, exquisite. At the center are Charlie and Henry, perfectly imperfect: endearing, infuriating, brave and tender, caught in a time of enormous change, as The Great War rocks Europe and real magic seeps back into the world. When nothing is certain and trust is fragile, how do you decide what is best for yourself, your lover, your friends or your world? Arcane History includes The Magic Box, Elemental, and The Wizard Hunt. This really is the series you should read next.

A terrific series.Reviewed in the United States on May 10, 2020
I've enjoyed all three books in this series. There are many unexpected and fascinating elements: The setting in Toronto; World War I with all the issues of patriotism, young men serving and dying; the the protagonist--poor and nearly broken who manages thought luck and guile to lift himself up; his loyalty to friends and lover. It is interesting that there are only hints at a physical relationship. And that's fine. It gives it a YA sensibility. Clearly others books are in the works for this first rate series and I'll look forward to them. Mr. Thrower--very fine work. You are a skilled storyteller. Keep it up.

I’m very buried in this magical world created in these books. I’m looking forward to the fourth one. I recommend this to anyone who enjoys a little paranormal reading. The books are very very well written
