Product Description

This is the unforgettable story of Maeve Donovan. Set in troubled Ireland and America, and spanning sixty years of the twentieth century, this exhilarating and heartrending saga tells of the passions, triumphs and tragedies that governed her life and those of her children and grandchildren.

Maeve is the daughter of a wealthy Dubliner, a Protestant. Strong-willed and unorthodox, she flouts her parents’ wishes by marrying Danny, a rebellious and idealistic young Roman Catholic. On the day that her son Kieran is born, Danny is in the thick of the Easter Rising, fierce in his idealism yet as conventional in his views of women and marriage as Maeve is unconventional. When Danny’s unruly temper begins to direct itself against Maeve and Kieran, Maeve finds herself deeply attracted to Danny’s strong and gentle brother, Dermot. But Dermot is a priest, and therefore forbidden. Their passion and guilt have dire repercussions for generations to come.

HASH(0x9ea47de0) out of 5 stars A wonderful intriguing read March 12 2015

I read this book from beginning to end, reluctant to put it down. It covered the Irish troubles and i read about the families in those times right from the First World War until the late 1960's. The story travels from Ireland to the USA but never forgetting the families that were left there. This, to me, is history, some of which I remember, and even today it is unfinished. The story covers both Southern Ireland and Northern Island and of course is focussed on the division between both and also the terrible heartbreak of forbidden love and it's consequences. i was hoping there may be a sequel but perhaps not.

As an Irish-born woman myself, I could relate to the country, the idealism and nationalism, very well. I am not sure that everyone could though, if they did not have that background. Apart from that, it is an excellent and spell-binding read. The characters seem real and the story line is captivating. I got a bit tired towards the end -it's an exceptionally long book but well worth reading. Maureen Rowland-aitken, johannesburg, South Africa

Fascinating trip across 50 years / three generations. Interesting incite into the implication of Irish and/or Jewish heritage. Ms. Townsend takes you through several wars, conflicts between personal relationships and patriotism. I was sorry to have the book end... such intriguing but understandable family complications. A very good read!
HASH(0x9e4b5570) out of 5 stars Predictable and too long. Jan. 29 2014

This book attempts to delineate the lives and experiences of several generations. It would have been better if it had been more narrowly focused. Some characters seem extraneous to the plot. It is somewhat difficult to identify with the protagonists. The editing was poorly done. However, this novel was worth reading.

Really enjoyed this book as it takes the reader on a journey through the Irish uprising to present day. Did not care for the ending as it seemed like the author just suddenly "ran out" of steam. I would recommend the book.
