Product Description

In a struggling Amish settlement on the harsh Colorado plain, Abbie Weaver refuses to concede defeat to hail, drought, and coyotes, even as families begin to give up and return east. The biggest challenge of all is the lack of a spiritual shepherd and regular worship. When Abbie discovers the root of a spiritual divide that runs through the settlement, she faces her own decisions about what she believes. She must choose between a quiet love in her cherished church, passion with a man determined to leave the church, or imagining her life with neither.

A different kind of pioneer story. It is 1914 but Colorado is still a wild, relatively unsettled part of the country. Land is cheap but not without challenges as a small group of Amish settlers soon discover. This whole story fascinated me on so many levels. The historical facts for one -- the author based the settlement on actual Amish endeavors in the area at the same time and she deals with a lot of 'big' questions. The conflict that stems from those concerns -- both personal and as a group -- compelled me to keep reading.

No worries if you are not an Amish fiction fan. This isn't 'that' book. If you like pioneer stories with a good does of grit, you'll like this novel. It's about living a dream -- willing a dream actually and what you do when that dream starts crumbling right before your eyes. Do you let it go or hang on for all you are worth? And at what cost? Not just to you, but to those you love.

Told through multiple viewpoints Wonderful Lonesome is a sombre tale that will haunt you long after you close the book.

Thank you Olivia for a beautiful story of faith and true love mingled with heartache, struggles, and even death. This is a story of twelve families who left home to go to Colorado to better themselves. Unfortunately, drought and hot weather brought hardship. One by one they began to go back home. I loved Abby's determination and faith in God. When everyone else lost hope of things getting better and getting their own minister, she held on. However, she almost missed the answer to her prayers when she refused to accept the new Mennonite pastor, simply because he was not Amish. Then there was the factor of marriage. Her stubborn refusal to accept any church, other than the Amish church, as being the true one almost caused her to lose the man she loved. Read this story for yourself and see how things unfolded in the lives of those people.

I didn't realise that there had been a failed Amish settlement near Limon, Colorado in the early 1900s, so when I realised this book was set at that time and location, I was surprised. Nevertheless, and knowing that ultimately the settlement failed, I still enjoyed reading the book.
I liked Abbie's tenacity, and how both Willem and Rudy were each interested in courting her, but neither had the 'gumption' to come out and say it officially. I adored Ruthanna and my heart broke for her troubles. I enjoyed reading about the other characters as well, and how they all had to come to term with 'Gotte's wille' (God's will) for their settlement and for each individual and family.
All that said, I did not like the ending. Without spoiling anything, it felt very abrupt and out of character for Abbie to make the decision she did
