4.0 out of 5 stars Rarely Seen African Tribal Art. Dec 1 2012
By James I. Cole - Published on
Format: Paperback Verified Purchase
Softcover with flaps, 11" x 9.25", 204 pages, about 130 items in color. English and Italian text. A catalogue of African tribal art from private Italian collections, which means that they have been rarely published. Edited by Ivan Bargna and Giovanna Parodi da Passano. Published by Silvana Editoriale in 2010.

This book should probably be rated between 3-Stars and 4-Stars : It has some good things going for it, such as rarely published African tribal objects, good photography and nice also has some drawbacks, such as too many ordinary items, ponderous text, and way-too-brief object descriptions. The problem with the text may result from translation issues, but frankly, I think that it is probably too pretentious in both English and Italian. The book features a few flags, but most of the objects are masks and figures. In the final analysis, if you can purchase this book for about half of it's listed $60 (35 Euro) price, (as is the case in late 2012), then it's probably worth your attention for the photos of rarely-seen tribal art alone.
