The book has helped even more with the key competencies of storytelling:
selling, process-driven, next steps, anchor-driven, beginning with a bang, succinct, focus, dynamics, involvement, staging, and audience research.
One idea that really resonated with me is that "when you lift yourself up, you let your audience down." The advice is to sell the audience on how great your process is rather than how great you are. Not only do I think this is smart psychology, but it motivates me more to speak publicly because it moves the focus from ME to WHAT my message is. I realized this before when I read Success Secrets of the Motivational Superstars welcome reminder to my confidence.
This is why World Class Speaking in Action is such a ray of hope, a lifeline in a world that craves clear communication but seems unable to give it. Talent has traditionally been passed on through a system of apprenticeship, and seldom by genetics. The son is rarely able to follow in the father’s footsteps. This is because talent is closely connected to a number of democratic elements, the right teacher, the right tools, and persistent practice. This book provides all of those elements, and leaves the ball in your court.
This book has not one, but 50 authors, and they have one thing in common. They are all certified as World Class Speaking Coaches. Imagine how long it would take to learn the lessons in this book if you had to rely on your own experience? Experience is supposed to be the worst teacher, because if gives the test before the lesson. World Class Speaking in Action reverses that unfortunate formula by giving us the benefit of untold years of experience, in a form that is readable and actionable.
A Japanese proverb has it that, “Although blue dye comes from the indigo plant, it is bluer than indigo; the student has overcome the master (from whom he has learned).” Each of the authors of this book has learned from Master teachers. Yet each has developed his or her talents in a way that shines twice; once reflecting the greatness of the teacher, and twice reflecting the talents and preferences of the student. This is an inspiration for all of us who would learn from the experience of others who have gone before us.
Even familiar concepts deliver fresh insights in the context of someone who has walked the talk. This is a book to be read carefully and put into practice. Start with the chapters that speak to your most pressing needs as a speaker. Speed readers need not bother. The value is in applying what you learn.
Pull one lesson from each chapter and you will be many times the speaker you are today. Then return for more. This book is all about Action.
This statement by the renowned motivational speaker Les Brown says it all. Les Brown is a recipient of the Golden Gavel Award by Toastmasters International and is on the Hall of Fame list of the National Speakers Association. Having this bold endorsement on the book cover has put a big smile on my face.
I am one of the contributing authors of the book and I went into some deep thinking before I wrote my chapter entitled: Be Diligent and Your Audience Will Be Delighted. In my chapter, I have several of my real life speaking case studies in the Middle East as well as some of the professional speakers I dealt with on a personal level.
My colleagues, 49 contributing authors, approached their chapters in the same manner. We wanted to provide YOU, the reader, with hands on speaking tips and tricks to improve your speaking abilities so that you get the results you are seeking in your personal as well as professional life!
To paraphrase what Les Brown has said: If you want to thrive in your life, read this book! Being able to speak and influence people will open the doors of success to YOU!
Public speaking is one of the common fears many people have and these days, especially if you are in business, is almost impossible to achieve anything if you don’t have ability to stand in front of the people and say at least few meaningful words.
For that reason, book such as this one, written by fifty specialists in the field who have in common enormous experience having trained numerous people all over the world, is of great help even for people who consider themselves educated and skillful public speakers. All those authors are certified World Class Speaking Coaches and it’s great to have in one place so much useful knowledge that can be studied before you actually had chance to step on some stage in front of many people.
Given my vast experience of public speaking, both in my professional and private life, it was still nice to see there are many tricks that I was able to learn on the pages of the book confirming that for public speaking no matter how experienced you consider yourself there is always a space to advance and improve your abilities.
Therefore ‘World Class Speaking in Action’ is a book that can be recommended both for beginners and experienced people in public speaking, because no matter how many times you appeared in front of the audience there is always something more you can learn. And this book manages to show exactly that.
clearly put in a great deal of time and effort to make this a "must have" book for every speaker. I wish I had this information 10 years ago when I started out as a speaker.
