If you're a fan of the ASOIAF books and haven't read The Word of Ice & Fire - The Untold History of Westros, I strongly suggest it. This book is a great way to fill your time while we patiently wait for The Winds of Winter to one day be released.
This book details everything from the Dawn Age with the children of the forest and giants to the rise of the Targaryen line. It goes into great detail of all the Targaryen kings, Robert's Rebellion, break downs of each region of Westros and histories of each noble family. Also a good section of the book goes into details of different regions beyond the Sunset Kingdoms where you get more information on the histories in each area.
The information given in this book is amazing and definitely worth the time. You learn lots of new small details that give you many "ah ha" moments that connect to current time lines occurring in the ASOIAF series.
I took my time reading this book, only reading one small section a day because you're given so much detail and I needed to give some of it time to sink in. I love reading peoples theories online of how the series is going to end and especially love reading all the tin foil theories because they get you really thinking.

Format: Hardcover
"The World of Ice and Fire: The Untold History of Westeros and the Game of Thrones," by George R.R. Martin, Elio M. Garcia, Jr., and Linda Antonsson, is a lovely oversized book replete with gorgeous illustrations by some 27 artists and numerous short chapters concerning, well, the "history" of the fictional world of Westeros. It's unclear to me whether these stories were written by GRRM himself or by his co-authors, Garcia and Antonsson, who run a well-known fan website about Westeros, but in either case, the entries are entertaining and educational for those of us who have followed the books, and the HBO television show, avidly over the years. The book is divided into sections about ancient history, the reign of the dragons and the Targaryen conquest and rule, the fall of the dragons and "the glorious reign" of Robert Baratheon, ending more or less where "A Song of Ice and Fire" begins. Following these sections is another, longer section detailing the history of each of the Seven Kingdoms, and the histories of other lands outside of Westeros. I think you pretty much have to be a fan of the books/show to be taken with this large volume, although the quality of the paper and the beautiful artwork are definitely worth a look even if you know nothing of this fantastical world. Me, I love it, and I will savour it for years to come.

This book is definitely worth it. It's written as if a maester wrote it, so it's not just an informal book but actually has the essence of the original book series. Anyone who loved the history, stories, and legends in the series will love this book, it goes into detail about the early history, then the Targaryen dynasty, then going into detail about all the regions of Westeros and the rest of the world. For the price of this book, i got way more than i expected, i'd honestly pay more for the book because of the amount of content it came with. Also the art works are amazing and the book itself feels really nice - and its huge. 10/10

An excellent book on the history of Westeros, Essos and everything else in this world. The e-book version has beautiful drawings and maps while the audio version is read by someone sounding quite like a maester giving a history lesson.

As a huge fan of the book series, I believe this is the one and only work, apart from the books themselves, that needs to be bought to fully grasp ASOIAF. Honestly, if you want to disentangle all these house names, locations, past events and historical figures that are sometimes only brushed upon in the five published books, this is what you need! I had to read a lot of the Westeros Wiki entries before being at ease with all the geo-political history of Westeros and Essos. This book saves you that trouble. You like A Song of Ice and Fire, but feel a bit lost sometimes and are yearning for more details? Buy The World of Ice and Fire.

This book is an esoteric collection of "historical" facts related to the 7 kingdoms and their various components and ruling dynasties or families. For the truly dedicated fan. Useful as a reference tool while reading one of the novels. Would greatly add to the rich tapestry of the backstory.
Rather dry and tedious if read as a stand-alone.
