Product Description

From School Library Journal

Grade 4-8-A treasure trove of activities awaits readers of this wonderfully executed survey of the Wright brothers and their invention. The narrative flows easily and is complemented by numerous photographs that give a sense of history and this event. Boxed descriptions of other early flight pioneers enhance Carson's presentation and situate the brothers within their contextual company. The author then introduces 21 activities-hands-on opportunities with gliders; pitch, roll, and yaw; propellers; and, tangentially, Morse code (send a telegram like the Wrights); anemometer (make one to measure the wind); and scones (bake some up like Orville at Kitty Hawk). This is a valuable resource for student reports and projects, and for classroom units. The book opens with an extensive time line; a well-developed glossary, Web sites, and real sites to visit round it out.

HASH(0xa2811e04) out of 5 stars Wright Brothers for Kids ---- Awesome Read! Aug. 15 2004

Format: Paperback
My daughter had to do a book report last year on the Wright Brothers. This was a great historical book that was very readable to any child older than 9 years of age. I also read the book myself as I find this topic interesting and was very impressed with the history and activities this book introduced. I believe it was a perfect mixture of reading and activities to show the practical application of what you had just learned. My daughter and I both loved it. This book will definately increase the facination towards flying or at least give one an appreciation as to how far we've come in flight travel.

HASH(0xa2811e58) out of 5 stars 5 year old LOVED the book Dec 22 2009

My almost 6 year old LOVED the book. He read it cover to cover by himself (reads at a 7th grade+ level) and talked about it every day. He was so sad when I returned the book to the library because he wanted to do all the experiments in it. I just bought the book for him for Christmas! He's going to be so excited! Of the hundreds of books he has rented from the library, I'm pretty sure this has been his favorite. He really enjoyed the time line in the book and enjoyed seeing how his other favorite pilots fit into the Wright Brother's lives. I definately recommend this book and so does my son.

Thorough review of the Wright brothers' experiments, with activities like making a glider and experimenting with lift. I thought the writing style was a bit dry.

HASH(0xa2813654) out of 5 stars Excellent book for children about the history of flight Sept. 29 2015

Excellent book for children about the history of flight. It includes activities so they can experiment and rediscover how things fly by themselves. I wish the book would also include simple aerodynamics, but it can be combined with other books on the subject.
