Now more than 2 years since the original review. Cams still work ok, software application although constantly updated is still often problematic and limited as far as reliability and motion detection go. Sound from the camera is not very good and often look as if it is muted. Picture is good for the price as well as field of view. The picture of the motion video is somewhat better than what I included here which is a compressed version of the original video. Still no Windows or Web support (Android and iOS native support). MicroSD recording is fine but playback is still a pain.
Recording options:
1) Free 12 seconds motion video to "Wyze" cloud with alerts (notifications). 5 minutes "cool down" period where no recording nor alert takes place.
2) Continuous or motion detection recording to microSD card. No alert nor notification when motion is detected.
3) Paid Monthly Subscription of full length motion detection to the cloud for 14 days (no "cooldown" period), with alerts (notifications).
No recording option to local NAS, SMB, FTP or other cloud services (Google, Dropbox, etc.)
Still a good value for the price.
Added a 12 seconds motion detection video and picture of the Wyze pan cam looking through window in sunny daytime.
UPDATE April 2019.
Added pictures of camera looking through window. One in cloudy day time and another one using night vision with IR led turned off. Note that I am using a separate stand alone IR led lamps outside so this is why the vision is still pretty clear.
UPDATE February 2019.
Good support provided by Wyze for these cameras and those puppies are still going strong despite the fact that both of my cams are being used to look through windows one inside the house the other one outside in my unheated shed.
Also, you can now turn on night vision while turning off the IR led which is very useful for a cam looking through a window. I can see clearly now...as long as I have enough ambient outside light. Which I do, most of the time. All of the below evaluation still valid.
UPDATE May 7, 2018.
I have seen very little updates/enhancements for the Ezviz mini o cam while Wyze Labs is constantly improving their software. Ezviz added motion detection area does not work as of this date. Also, I own 2 Ezviz mini o and only one got the latest firmware update.
The WyzeCam is still suffering from the short 12 seconds motion detection clip every 5 minutes which is the biggest drawback imo. It makes the cam unreliable as a security solution. Also, you can not bypass the cloud recording. If you turn it off and use only the micro sd card, you do not get any motion notifications. Even if cloud storage is free, I wish there was an option to turn off cloud recording and still receive notifications when motion is detected using the mSD card. It's impossible as of this date to record motion clips or pictures to neither a cloud service such as google drive, an ftp server, nas drive, or Windows share. The cam also lack a web interface for either viewing the live stream or changing settings.
The V1 cam records at only 10 fps which can make fast or close moving objects very choppy. The V2 version is somewhat better recording at 15 fps (please note that V1 is not sold anymore and what you will get as of this date is version 2).
However, they did improve the motion detection feature. You can now define a rectangular zone for the motion detection area. Also, both motion/sound detection sensitivity were changed from a Low/Medium/High setting to a 0 (low) - 100 (High) slider which much improves false alerts. You can also use the WyzeCam with the popular Android TinyCam software while I have yet to make the Ezviz work with it.
There were lots of connection issues that have now been fixed.
You can use the cam through a window by turning off the led lights to avoid reflection. However, this also turn off the night mode (black and white) which makes the view extremely dark unless you have good outdoor lights where you aim the cam.
Wyze also has a user forum (Wyzecam.com) where you can get help from other users should you run into problems with your cam(s).
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
WARNING: upgrading the cam firmware to v 3.9.2.30 could brick your cam. Do it at your own risk. Update May 2018: Wyze now has a procedure where you can fix your firmware cam should it get corrupted. See Wyzecam site.
If I compare the WyzeCam to the Ezviz mini (about the same specs but Ezviz is a little more expensive), I much prefer the Ezviz mainly because of better software and motion detection algorithm.
The picture quality and wide angle are better on the Wyzecam.
Ezviz will record at least 1 minute of footage (sure on sd card if you do not take the non free cloud server option) when motion is detected and there is about no gap between motion detection triggers. WyzeCam records to the cloud a 12 seconds footage, which is much to short, then is 5 minutes without capturing any other motion. This is totally useless as a security option. At least if you had the option of recording the motion notification trigger footage to the sd card, that would be a better option (if longer clips without gap are allowed).
The WyzeCam has only 3 motion sensitivity settings, high, medium and low. Way too many false alarms on medium and high (especially if you place the camera in front of a window to monitor outside) and almost none on the low setting. Ezviz has motion sensitivity settings that range from 0 to 6.
However, the WyzeCam allows you to share (export) the motion detection footage video to virtually any apps installed on your device (such as Google photo) which is much better than Ezviz Youtube and facebook only options. But again, you can only export the 12 seconds footage.
Both cams allow continuous or on motion event recording to the sd card. Wyze will even record sound, smoke and CO alarm events. It is not clear whether sensitivity will affect the recordings of the motion recordings.
Maybe Wyze will improve there software motion detection algorithm, but as it stands as of feb 24, 2018, I much prefer the Ezviz mini as a cam security option, mainly because of the longer, no gap, motion detection recordings and better sensitivity level. None of those two cams will email a picture of the triggered event, which would be a real bonus imo.
Hope this review was helpful.
