There's about a gazilion options with that thing, but I mostly just use it to watch TV and play some videogames on PS4 so all I wanted was surround sound. I also use it a bit through Bluetooth to listen to podcasts while I'm cooking and it works great, it was super easy to connect to my phone.
I've tried it for playing music, and there's like a million different modes you can use depending on what type of music you're listening to and the ambience you want to create. Most people know way more than I do about this so I'll let others review more thoroughly, but the sound quality is pretty great even though the Micca are inexpensive speakers.
The remote is great and the yamaha has HDMI-CEC, so I can control my Raspberry-PI running LibreELEC/Kodi with the Yamaha remote. The TV is also HDMI-CEC enabled (most recent TVs are), so the TV remote can control the Yamaha too.
Overall I'm happy with this purchase.
Sound quality as usual, very Yamaha
Bluetooth connection very intuitive and easy
to setup.
I started out with the RXV385, and liked it so much that I found myself wishing it also had network capability for internet radio and Amazon Music etc., so I returned it and moved up to the otherwise identical RXV485 (with network) instead.
Both models have more than enough output power to run a 5.1 home theatre system at normal listening levels all the way up to pointless deafening levels (don't ask how I know that..). The menu systems are reasonably simple and easy to figure out, with just enough options to set up a good sound system.
I really like these receivers, especially the networked RXV485: I use MythTV as my PVR / video playback machine here, and quickly customized it to control the volume/mute of the RXV485 by sending it commands over the network. The internet radio feature is also excellent and worth the price delta from the RXV385.
More expensive AVRs have more features, such as more speaker outputs for 7.1 set-ups or fancier 5.1 configurations, but all I want/need is 5.1.
One feature I wish the RXV385/RXV485 did have was per-speaker subwoofer crossover frequencies in the setup menu: instead, there's just a single crossover frequency for use with all five speakers. Not a problem if all five are more or less identical (I recommend the NHT SuperZero 2.1 speakers for this!), but a minor annoyance when the front speakers are much larger than the satellites.
Another omission is that the built-in automatic speaker set-up system (YPAO) claims to also set up the parametric equalizer individually for each speaker, but yet there is no way to view or adjust the settings it makes. One can instead switch the equalizer to manual and make one's own adjustments in the blind, without any idea what YPAO recommended.
Other than that, no complaints. I really like the RXV485 and am sticking with it!
This receiver is very versatile with many settings for gaming, music, TV, movies. It's easy to find what works with your speaker system.
I highly recommend this receiver. It's worth it for the price and quality.
I was aiming at an economical replacement of an older amplifier and didn't realize this one comes with YPAO, a feature for automatically adjusting the 5.1 speaker volumes and distance configuration via a supplied microphone. Even if those settings are not what you want, it should be close and then you can tweak it from there.
This is my first amplifier with Bluetooth audio input, and it is fantastic quality. I can't perceive any audio difference to a cabled connection from an iPhone.
I've also tried the FM tuner, and the quality there seems fine.
I liked the on screen set up. It's nice to be able to relabel the HDMI for those who don't know the numbers. I have one labelled "COMPUTER" and so it's easy to select without remembering HDMI 1,2, 3 or 4.
My recommendation is people should just hook a computer up to their entertainment system. It can supply Spotify, Amazon Prime, Netflix, iTunes, Youtube and anything that runs on a web site. A computer OS can be upgraded to work with the latest codecs and versions of software over time - unlike hardware devices plugged in (chromecast, fire stick, etc.) which always have a limited firmware lifespan. It's a better strategy than investing in the add-in hardware or buying TVs or receivers that attempt to do those services. Yes, you will have to replace the computer after some years, but you can keep the same AV receiver and TV if you want to.

Pros.. Don't be fooled this thing has power in all 7 channels playing at once just be reasonable. I thought it wouldn't be enough to push the speakers i selected all which are 200watts rms each but these aren't expensive, quiet cheap about $150 for all of them not including the sub which i had and replaced the woofer to a skar but i will fill in the details and specs at the end. Now I'm no audiophile but it sounds great. The receiver on its own is nice i haven't used the MusicCast yet but this thing rocks, now remember this is not for people who want to blast at full volume nor have I tried -8 on the nobb is good enough for me. but I will say this thing makes me want too. (in my Usher voice) Really though, you might want to hold some restraint my speakers sound like there asking for more, lol really. If your on a budget then this is it, the bee's knees for under $600 before taxes. So I did some homework before buying it if Atmos is what your looking for the start here. Other than that 2.1 speaker setup is nice as well i left the crossover at 80hz the blend is seamless from bookshelf to subwoofer and the bass, those lows that my sub puts out cant wait to get another.
Cons.. Well there is a static sound that i get from switching apps on my TV and Cable box, and i wish i got a better center channel speaker it just goes hollow under the right conditions. Oh and the Disney app also from time to time gives me the same static so others need not worry it don't do the same thing on hbo. When ever I use the controller for volume from my cable tv i have to lower it slowly instead of quickly like the remote that came with it. So that is pretty much it if your into stereo's have fun if not and your just getting into it do your homework online and youtube plenty of places to look.
So specs for speakers: 2 Orders of Acoustic Audio 251B rms 200watts and Acoustic Audio by Goldwood Acoustic Audio AA35CB rms 200watts, Pyle Home PDMN48 rms 200watts, DS18 MD12 Car Subwoofer to replace the blown sub in an old powered sub box from Velodyne who remembers them huh? i use the pyle speakers for fronts and the others for surround and its a great blend for me, I love the sound i can move up in speakers when ever i want or my budget allows till thenim going to love basking in the frequency output of my stereo and you should to any questions feel free to ask im sure i can answer them i will update this post in a week or two just to make sure people know about its longevity or lack there of, til then happy listening... ohh and just to note atmos does not work correctly on Disney plus atleast on xfinity and the app on samsung 65 in tv^^^^
This new unit is much easier to use than my old receiver. The interface for Yamaha units is really straightforward and intuitive - as compared with Denon, which always seemed like a mess.
The WiFi connectivity makes it really easy to use airplay and control music streaming and volume with my phone. If you’re considering this unit vs a Bluetooth only model, it’s worth the extra money. The Airplay and audio quality are well worth the added price.
