***7 Years Bad Sex ~ A Romantic Comedy***

One wedding. One curse? Disaster ever after…

A seven-years-bad-sex curse? Surely not! Yet something went wrong when rock singer Casey and drummer Alex got married on that beautiful yacht anchored off St Tropez in the south of France. Something went badly wrong. For even on their wedding night, the young couple discovers a complete and somewhat surprising inability to make love. Muddling through their honeymoon with a string of thin excuses for their predicament, the lovers defer finding a solution (and panicking) until the return to their home in London. After all, they married for life and to make rock music, not for the love of sex. Right?

But when they resume life as normal in London, all hell breaks loose. Increasingly frantic in their quest for release, the unhappy newlyweds embark on a string of hilarious and occasionally harmful antics that drives them, their band, and an assortment of random strangers to the brink of despair. But it ain’t over ‘til it’s over or, in this case… it ain’t over ‘til the newlyweds sing.

"7 years bad sex" marks my first read from author Nicky Wells. Going into this book I had no idea what to expect. However, I quickly found this rom-com to be quite a treat.

The premise of this novel is simple, cute, and unique. When rockstar Newlyweds, Casey and Alex, encounter problems getting intimate, they search high and low for a solution - any solution - that can help reconnect them [some options less advisable than others]. As one can expect from such a plot, "7 years of bad sex" is comedy about the adventures, and misadventures Casey and Alex experience in their quest for intimacy.

I have stated before that books like this are difficult to review. While I love them, they are meant to be taken at face value - that is the dilemma I face with this novel. That being said, there really wasn't anything that I disliked about this story. From a few pages in, I fell in love with this novel. The light, and humorous plot made for a perfect summer read. I found myself laughing out loud over my morning cup of tea. I definitely got a good feel for this novel - I can even picture the book as a sitcom, or even a romantic comedy film.

As for the characters, Casey and Alex, readers can't help but love them. They are clearly a couple in love, and prepared to take "for better or for worse seriously" - even if "for worse" means some rather disastrous attempts at love making [or lack thereof].

Ultimately, for light summertime reading, I have no complaints about this book. It provided a nice change of pace from my heavier reading materials. Nicky Wells has done a fantastic job of creating a unique plot [complete with wonderful characters] that will keep readers interested, and laughing. I highly recommend that romance/chick-lit lovers give this book a read.

When rock singer Casey and drummer Alex get married on a beautiful yacht surrounded by their closest friends and family, the night is picture perfect. Their maid of honour surprises them with a beautiful display in the sky, the food is great, and the atmosphere breathtaking. There's only one problem- after the wedding Casey and Alex find themselves unable to consummate their marriage. Despite having *ahem* consummated their relationship many times prior to the wedding suddenly they are unable to do the deed, and it's driving them- and everyone around them- crazy.

When they hear about a seven years bad sex curse it sounds bizarre, but as time goes on and the two are unable to make love despite having tried every trick in the book (some less advisable than others) the curse theory starts gaining some ground. Are Casey and Alex doomed forever or can they find a way to break the curse and stay married?

I've read every one of Nicky Wells' books to date, and I think that 7 Years Bad Sex may be my favourite to date! It was playful and fun, and the wacky scenarios just didn't stop! Before reading this book I hadn't imagined there were so many ways that a couple could fail at having sex! Somehow Casey and Alex manage to try- and fail- at having sex over and over again. As their frustration mounts they resort to trying increasingly risky things in order to successfully do the deed and when none of them work they are left wondering if they can stay married. After all, what's marriage without sex? This is an interesting question for us, as readers, to ponder. Casey and Alex are very happy together prior to their marriage, and even in the beginning of their marriage despite the first few failed attempts at having sex.

I pre-ordered this latest 'Rock Star Romance' having read Nicky's previous works and I wasn't disappointed.

Casey and Alex are befallen by an age old curse that prevents them performing in the bedroom department. Wacky decisions - and not for the best - add to the fun and misadventures along the way.

A great summer read and many laugh-out-loud moments throughout.

HASH(0xa1733378) out of 5 stars Witty & Poignant! May 31 2015

Format: Paperback
Both witty and poignant in equal measure, 7 Years Bad Sex is a gem!

Alex and Casey make up half the band, Blue Heart. And they own each others' hearts. The story begins at the wedding - a beautiful affair. However, once their honeymoon begins they realize they have a problem...they seem to be having issues getting completely physical.

7 Years Bad Sex chronicles Alex and Casey's start to married life and their trials in intimacy. While neither believes in such things as curses, it's hard to deny that something wonky is going on. They try everything, and I do mean everything, to make it to the finish line. Luckily, they have a deep and abiding love because the lack of release keeps them both on the verge of blowing.

Wells cleverly relates this tale of woe with with both humor and compassion. I admired their courage and their mutual respect. I also admired the love and deep bond between Alex and Casey and I was anxious for them to reverse the curse. They were fortunate to have supportive friends and to have met and made a few new ones. It eased their struggle. The lengths this couple had to go to would push some over the edge. Alex and Casey, though, they fought hard and so deserved their HEA.

Honestly, I was full of panic at the whole thought of this book. Yet, I'm a huge Nicky Wells fan and knew that the story would (had to!) work out in the end. This book is charming, funny and well, yes a bit stressful! Yet in the end, love wins out and it helps you keep your faith in the institution of marriage. I highly recommend this book!!

Alex and Casey are celebrating their fairytale wedding on a yacht moored off San Tropez, in the company of their friends and family. They have no inkling of the traumatic weeks ahead. As they toast each other their attention and focus is drawn to a display in the sky. There’s a strange rumbling noise from the sea, like thunder, as they make the toast, eyes skyward, but only Casey and Alex seem to notice. Something very mysterious has happened and it seems to have an adverse effect on Alex and Casey’s love life. Actually they don’t, or rather can’t, continue that part of their relationship. Theirs is rapidly turning into a completely no sex marriage. They can’t understand what has happened because both of them desperately want to continue their previously healthy sex life. Then someone mentions a ‘seven years bad sex curse’ superstition. Surely not?

Although the idea of a curse is quite bizarre, Casey and Alex’s problem persists on their return to home life. Despite desperately trying any and all ways, some making me wince, some unknowingly dangerous and others sweet and considerate, none of their efforts alleviate the problem. As each attempt fails and nothing seems to help, they become ever more distressed and disheartened as their pre marital happiness is whittled away bit by bit.

Nicky Wells has turned what is actually a serious and sensitive subject matter into a light-hearted, humorous and very imaginative story. Having said that, emotions do run deep and I found myself rooting for Casey and Alex, who are having a really rough time which impacts on their lives and their marriage. They are fun characters though, and the supporting cast are likeable too, and do their best to help the couple get back on track. I particularly enjoyed James and Rodge.

A neat concept, taking the seven years of bad luck superstition a step further.

I have to say (as I suspect a few people will) that as soon as I saw the title of this book I simply had to read it. The first question in my mind was: 7 Years Bad Sex? How? Yes, I was wondering how a newlywed couple (who incidentally had a healthy sex life until the earth moved in a not so good way on their wedding day) would survive seven years without sex. More, though, I was wondering how an author could sustain it: keep the reader engaged and write about failed sexual exploits without writing about, well, the nitty-gritty of those failed exploits. I am super-pleased to say Nicky Wells pulled it off beautifully and with that special kind of laugh out loud humour that still has you feeling for the couple. A certain line, dare I repeat it??? Um, no. That would be a spoiler. Let’s just say the climax was building, we were definitely heading for that Yes, YessS, YessSSS, moment – and then there was an unfortunate reaction … to rubber. Please wash out your minds. It’s not quite what you’re thinking. Yup, I laughed out loud, in public. When I read the workmen scene prior, ditto. Nicky has a fabulous knack of portraying people that makes you instantly recognise them as people you know or have had contact with. The supporting cast, Alex’s best mate and best man with his nudge, nudge, wink, wink ribald mentality, the girlfriends with their get-the-goss and then try to fix it philosophy, James and Rodge, they’re all living, breathing people.

As are Alex and Casey. Along with the humour there are such tender moments as they search for the missing essential ingredient that supposed to seal their marriage. This is a couple that is meant to be together. They are soul mates. Poor Alex, even though he’s absolutely horrified and petrified that he can’t perform, that his manhood is under threat, he recognises Casey’s feelings of inadequacy and hurts for her. I adored his sensitive handling of the, um, sex toy situation.

I give this fabulous book a resounding five, not for its bravado, but for its sensitivity, superb writing and sheer entertainment. Loved it! Definitely highly recommended.
