Product Description

The game is being produced by Takashi Tezuka, the creative director of the original Yoshi’s Island for Super NES. Yoshi reunites with Baby Mario in a gorgeous landscape to help him to safety. Flutter jumps, ground pounds and egg throws all return, along with some new actions that use the unique features of Nintendo 3DS.

This game doesn't capture the magic of the first Yoshi's Island at all. The music is completely annoying and I had to play this game with the sound turned off to even try to enjoy it. The other thing that really bothers me with this game is that eggs come out of egg boxes all different colours and the number of bounces an egg can last before dropping gets in the way unlike in the first game. Pass on this if you're a Yoshi's Island fan. You'll be hugely disappointed.

This game is more or less the same game as Yoshi's Island on SNES and Yoshi's Island DS, but simply less well executed. Story wise, it follows Yoshi's Island. The stork delivered our heroes to the wrong house, so we have to start all over again. The art and music direction is dependent on taste, and some people may not like it. Personally, I don't mind most of it, except the victory music. Other complaints include the rather lame bosses and easier gameplay/scoring (the original and DS are quite hard if you want to 100% the game), but I don't mind those particularly much neither. To me, these are minor things that I can look over if it isn't for the following two flaws.

The main flaw of this game is the controls. Yoshi feels very sluggish compared to previous games, and to other platformers. It takes a fraction of a second from pressing a button to performing that action, and the difference is big enough that it gets annoying. It is most glaring if you try to shoot an egg straight up. In Yoshi's Island, you press up and press A twice quickly. In Yoshi's New Island, you need to wait for half a second after the first press of A to wait for the cursor to appear, before you press A a second time. The same kind of delay occurs with just about every action in this game.

The second major flaw is with how secret items are hidden. In Yoshi's Island and Yoshi's Island DS, red coins are generally hidden in out of the way places, and you have to search the map to find them. However, in Yoshi's New Island, they are generally hidden by being invisible (and cannot be collected), and will only appear if you hit some specific point on the map that is nearby. This means that you will have to step on every platform and see which ones make coins appear.

So long I have waited for a Yoshi Game. This one is near perfect, your get tons of powers, multiple colour yoshi's, and a multitude of variety. I hope this is a start of a new yoshi game trend.
If you don't get this game, there is no reason to own a 3DS.

Did you like Yoshi's Island? Do you crave more levels? If you said "yes" to both, then this is the game that you've been waiting for. It's a great extension to the original.
