Product Description

Maps define our lives as they define our world.

What were once the priceless resources of a brave and lonely few as they set off into the unknown are now carried in the pockets of billions around the globe. But they were never merely lines on paper - while depicting our geography we infused them with our intelligence, our desires, our imagination, and our memories.

Yesterday, we mapped the world only after we discovered its secrets. Today we map the mind and the body as we do so, and slowly unveil the universe before we set off into its infinite domains. Maps may have changed, but they are also changeless: they will always be guides to the spaces, the things and maybe the people around us.

This anthology charts eighteen worlds which are beautiful, frightening, alien, familiar - sometimes none of these, sometimes all. These stories cover every corner of the speculative map, featuring horror, science fiction, steampunk, high fantasy and more, in styles ranging from the literary and the lyrical to the pulpy and the thrilling.

Wherever you find yourself, there's only one thing you can ever know for sure:

I'm really not enjoying this anthology. Some of the stories are great, but most are not doing it for me.

4.0 out of 5 stars Saved the Best for Last Dec 2 2016

All very well written stories with a map or maps being an important feature. Most of the stories, however, seem negative & depressing -- apocalyptic. I prefer happier reading such as the final entry, Lindsay Buroker's "Remnants." Great story about a reckless pilot and a pessimistic engineer. There are danger and humor in equal measures.

This was a great read, glad a sci-fi friend recommended it to me as it's not a genre I'd normally read. Lynn Rushlau's tale about "Explorer Sevasstar" was wonderfully imaginative. She managed to build a rich universe in such a small space. I look forward to seeing more from her in the future. "The Memory Monster" by Joseph Lopez was also a favorite from this collection. Poignant and somewhat dark, it lays bare human impulses and urges and their impacts later in life as we struggle to come to terms with who we are.

The editors did a nice job putting together the collection and I plan to check out their past and future collections now as well.
4.0 out of 5 stars Unusual Premise June 1 2017

I've read a few short stories over the years that could/should have been included; some of them were pretty good. I'd say there might be something for most FX fans in this collection.
Maps, as most of these shorts indicate, are more than a guide for getting from 'here' to 'there'. Who hasn't enjoyed at least one trip as much as getting to 'there'?

5.0 out of 5 stars Great collection of short stories Dec 13 2016

I couldn't be happier with this collection for the price I paid. I enjoyed a great Saturday afternoon in my cozy couch accompanied with this book. It's a collection of short stories from different writers so I got a chance to enjoy different writing styles with consistency as all stories shared one theme. Some stories have really interesting way to wire "map" concept into them which amazed me a lot. This is a great buy especially for fans of short stories.
