I enjoyed it because it wasn't just the typical, "SOCIAL MEDIA RULES" kind of book. It offered balanced perspectives. He emphasized personal integrity. I like that he included more than just the Gary Vaynerchuk's of the world and people in such a wide range of businesses.
What could be better? Unless you were already aware of Robert Scoble or Gary Vaynerchuk, you might not know where to go to get more information about the specific things he cites. (caveat: I have not visited the website linked at the end of the book, perhaps he has links to Gary's books there, for example).
This book is an easy read, and he narrates stories of the guys and gals behind businesses who have achieved their status, and he assists the reader in how to prepare and implement becoming the marking icon for your business. This is such sound advice to implement. Think for a moment of business owners, authors, coaches and others you know who develop a marketing plan around their logo, brand name and colors, and spend much time on business planning and web design. Planning is so much easier than putting our faces out there and letting our smiles and bright eyes make the impression. Is it that easy? Not when most people are scared to stick their neck, and thus their face, out there.
Read Tom's book and nod your head yes and tell yourself how cool it would be for you to do this. This author is encouraging, witty, practical and resourceful. He can help you as he helped me with my business. He is a competent visionary who walks his talk and would expect no less when mentoring you.
Having known Tom and benefited from his considerable wisdom over 10 years ago for my own company, I wasn't surprised by the quality and power of this book. It solidifies my thinking, derived from Sandler Sales training 30 years ago, that 'people buy from people'. It was true then and remains true now. Tom provides many terrific ideas to appeal to a myriad personalities in business today. And does so with not only real-world experience and those of his colleagues but also with 'real' speak and engaging anecdotes to illustrate his points. I couldn't more highly recommend this book to not only business owners and executives but everyone looking to make a positive impact for themselves and on those around them. To meet Tom is to have a positive and life-affirming experience with lessons, wisdom and humor that endure.
Of particular value is how ideas are presented in small 2-5 paragraph segments each prefaced with an emboldened title that serves to introduce and reinforce the particulars of the topic. You Are The Logo does a great job of presenting thought provoking but broad strokes in a way that, like good marketing technique presents a call to action. What can I do to take better advantage of my professional persona as it now exists and of course, improve upon it as a means to grow my value to my business? No small order but with the clear and concise guidance provided by Tom Adams I am excited to try. Particularly since Tom surprises his readers with a special offer in the form of 15 exercises that serve as practical foundation for getting started.
I highly recommend this book and this author.
