>> IN BRIEF <<
The Thieve's essential oil blend is excellent. Great as a general antiseptic, immune support, throat infection eliminator, oral hygiene and dental cavity protection, household cleaning, and much more.
Young Living Oils are, in my opinion, over-rated and over-priced. I think this is the case for pretty much every Network Marketing product I have come across. Nothing wrong with the quality of their products, but simply over-priced (a lot, in my professional opinion) and sold with a lot of marketing hype to justify it.
If you just want Thieve's Oil and don't mind the cost, go for this product. For sure. If you'd rather save a lot of money for the same results, I provide info on how to do that, in the FULL REVIEW below.
5 stars for the Theive's blend, but only 3 stars for Young Living Essential Oil's rendition of it.
>> THE FULL REVIEW <<
I've been working with aromatherapy, as a self-health hobby and as a Traditional Naturopath, for over 20 years. I've had some pretty high quality oils in that time, such as rose oil costing nearly NZ$ 400 (about US$ 220 back at that time) for a 20 ml bottle. So I am well aware pure therapy grade essential oils can be expensive. However, this formula does NOT contain any oils that are typically high cost. Clove, lemon, eucalyptus, cinnamon, and rosemary--even at the highest therapeutic grade--are not known to be costly oils. On the contrary some of them are relatively inexpensive. Read on.
I have used a few bottles of Thieve's (a friend was or is a distributor some years ago) before deciding to make my own. I like the blend, and find it very useful. In fact it's one of my most used and favorite essential oil blends for daily use. You can find the recipe online, and for your convenience I have posted it below, along with links to the oils I use to make it with. I decided to make my own because I felt that spending roughly $30 to $40 for 15 ml of relatively inexpensive constituent oils was not justifiable. As mentioned above, none of these are rare/expensive oils.
>> YOUNG LIVING OILS <<
I have no reason to doubt Young Living makes high quality oils, but I fail to see how they can be so extraordinarily good that these kind of prices are justified. It must be remembered Young Living is primarily a multi-level marketing company, and MLM products are almost ALWAYS significantly more expensive than equivalent non-MLM products of the same (or better) quality. To justify such high prices (especially when many MLM companies promote that their products are LESS expensive because the "middle man" is cut out of the distribution process) they generally have to resort to making extraordinary claims about their products in order to justify the cost being high relatively to everything else on the market.
In my opinion, Young Living Oils gets into making extraordinary claims about their products. Looking at the background of Young himself indicates to me he may have some personal integrity issues, and this may be reflected in his company practices. One that especially concerns me is that apparently his literature promoted the idea of doing extractions at 0 psi (no pressure) for better quality oil. Yet his own factory was found to be doing extractions at 125psi, so high it blew up one of his self-made extraction devices and seriously injured a worker. This ended up in the media. Of course Young Living will have their own side to this story, but it raises big question marks for me. Whilst I am not a big supporter of the quackwatch.org site (and the people behind it) and I most certainly do NOT agree with the MOST of their worldview, I will say they have turned up some interesting and insightful info about the history of Gary Young (just search Google for "young essential oils quackwatch" without the quotation marks).
So what's the answer?
>> MY RECOMMENDATION <<
In my opinion we can get all the benefits and enjoyment of the Thieve's Oil blend for as little as 1/4 of the price. That sounds good to me. What's more, at 1/4 of the cost, I feel I can use it more liberally without costing a fortune.
I highly recommend making your own Thieves blend. It is very easy, and in fact fun and educational to do. The two most typical recipes I found online, and confirmed from numerous aromatherapy resources are:
1) Simply use equal parts of each oil.
2) Another is as follows: Clove Bud Oil 200 drops, Lemon Oil 175 drops, Cinnamon Oil 100 drops, Eucalyptus Oil 75 drops, Rosemary 50 drops.
Here are the Latin names of the oils most commonly used (as found in Young Living Thieves oil): clove (syzygium aromaticum), lemon (Citrus limon), cinnamon bark (Cinnamonum verum), eucalyptus (Eucalyptus radiata), rosemary (Rosemarinus officinalis)

An alternative to making you own, but still at a great price, is to buy from Plant Therapy Essential Oils. They have an excellent "Thieve's" formula product - Germ Fighter Synergy Essential Oil Blend. 30 ml (1 oz). 100% Pure, Undiluted, Therapeutic Grade
I was buying my single essential oils from this company to make my DIY Thieves Oil. I had quite a lot of email dialogue with the owner to sound him out about his products and to ask him his opinion about oil species variations in the Thieves recipe. He then mentioned to me he was developing a Thieves Oil equivalent that would be available soon. When it was released I bought a bottle and I like it. You get 30 ml (twice as much as the 15 ml Young Thieves oil) for less than 1/2 the price. That makes it 1/4 of the cost. Try it out. I am sure you won't be disappointed, so long as you don't mind putting to rest all the marketing hype from Young Living Oils.
Here are the links to the oils I used (and still use) for making my own Thieves oil. These are all from Plant Therapy Essential Oils, which is now one of my preferred therapy grade essential oil suppliers on Amazon.com:
- Organic Rosemary Essential Oil. 30 ml (1 oz). 100% Pure, Undiluted, Therapeutic Grade.
- Organic Eucalyptus Essential Oil. 30 ml (1 oz). 100% Pure, Undiluted, Therapeutic Grade.
- Cinnamon Bark Essential Oil. 30 ml (1 oz). 100% Pure, Undiluted, Therapeutic Grade.
- Lemon Essential Oil. 30 ml (1 oz). 100% Pure, Undiluted, Therapeutic Grade.
(There is also an organic lemon oil but as I write this they only have a 10 ml option on Amazon - Organic Lemon Essential Oil. 10 ml (1/3 oz). 100% Pure, Undiluted, Therapeutic Grade.
- Clove Bud Essential Oil. 30 ml (1 oz). 100% Pure, Undiluted, Therapeutic Grade.
(There is also an organic clove oil but as I write this they only have a 10 ml option on Amazon - Organic Clove Bud Essential Oil. 10 ml (1/3 oz). 100% Pure, Undiluted, Therapeutic Grade.
I would recommend the "organic" versions over the non-organic.
>> ANOTHER OPTION <<
Whilst looking up the above oils for this review, I also came across this "Thieve's" oil product: Four Thieves Synergy Blend Essential Oil- 10 ml
I know nothing about it, except what is written on the product page. I have not tried it, but it is certainly worth investigating. It is also a Thieve's oil formula.
>> P.S. OREGANO OIL <<
If you are interested in Thieves Oil I imagine you'll also be very interested in Wild Oregano Oil. On its own it has many of the anti-pathogenic properties of the various ingredients in Thieves Oil. Highly anti-bacterial, anti-viral, anti-fungal, and anti-parasitic. The two brands I recommend are Joy of the Mountains Oregano Oil - 1 Oz / 30ml, 100% Certified Organic and P73 Oreganol Oil, Super Strength, 1oz (I reached my link limit, so you'll need to paste "P73 Oregano OIl" into the Amazon searcher). You can read my review on the Joy of the Mountains oil for more information on them both.
Oregano is the #1 single oil used in my house. Thieve's is the #1 blend we use. I highly recommend then both.
>> IMPORTANT:: OIL STORAGE <<
If you make your own blend, be sure NOT to put it into a bottle that has a glass dropper and red rubber bulb. The clove oil will dissolve this rather quickly, and you will ruin your lovely oil blend. Even the more hardy black rubber bulbs will dissolve over time with Thieve's oil exposure. The white rubber tops are best, but hard to come by. You might find a supplier online by searching for "white rubber dropper bottle essential oils" (without the quotation marks). You'll see an example by looking at the Joy of the Mountain Oregano oil on Amazon.com.
If you can't find the chemical resistent bulbs, go for the "euro" style droppers. That's what this Thieve's Oil blend comes with, as do most essential oils. You can find them on Amazon.
Essential oils are best stored in dark brown bottles. Only use glass. Storing them in a refrigerator will help them to maintain their therapeutic qualities for a LOT longer. Some oils actually break down to form toxic compounds and mild irritants in as little as six months at room temperature. Keeping them refrigerated will help prevent this.
*** RATING -
This product from Young Living Essential Oils gets 3 stars because "Thieve's Oil" (as a formula) is truly excellent. No doubt about it. BUT it does not 5 stars because Young Living is, in my opinion, way over priced.
I trust this information is of use to you. Feel free to let me know if you have any questions.
If it has not been helpful, I'd appreciate knowing why, and that way I can perhaps improve it.
