Review

Second edition 9781550028768 has sold over 2500 copies since its release in December 2008.

Attempts to empower individual investors to take control of this important aspect of their portfolios and to demystify the bond market.

No nonsense, practical financial advice for Canadians.

Review

I’ve always been impressed by Hank’s knowledge of the bond market. He explains the inner workings of bonds and investment ideas in a clear and understandable way. I always learn something when he’s on the show.

(Mark Bunting Host, Market Call Tonight, Business News Network.)

Hank Cunningham is a widely acknowledged authority on Canadian fixed-income investing. Fortunately, Hank also has a remarkable talent for writing. In this book, Hank distills complex financial topics into crisp, and sensible prose, perfectly suited for every Canadian investor. A must read!

(Robert C. Caldwell Managing Director (BFS), Macquarie Private Wealth Inc.)

“Wise, justifiably opinionated and clearly written ― accessible to the ordinary investor. The recent stock market meltdown brought home to millions the fact that ‘experts’ may underprice risk and ignore the security imperatives of an aging clientele. This you can read and absorb, enabling you to take firmer control of your portfolio and your future.” ― Tom Kierans, former president of Scotia McLeod Inc., and current Chair of the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council and a Senior Fellow of Massey College at the University of Toronto

“Even if you’re on your way to talk about fixed-income investments with your financial advisor, you need to read this book.” ― J. Lyman MacInnis, Financial Advisor

“Hank Cunningham is a respected fixed-income professional who has demystified the bond markets for the retail investor. His knowledge and experience provide extremely useful insights into the debt capital markets.” ― Jeremy Fleming, Managing Director, Wealth Distribution, Foreign Exchange and Investment Products, TD Securities

"Many investors lack understanding of the fixed income markets, which is unfortunate given their importance as an economic driver and as an asset class in individual portfolios. Reading Hank Cunningham’s book In Your Best Interest is a great place to build that knowledge. It’s full of excellent information and advice that’s presented in a smart and highly readable format. If you want to learn more about the fixed-income markets and how they really work, Hank’s book is a must read!" ― Debra A. Hewson, President and CEO, Odlum Brown Limited

This book radiates common sense. It takes investors to the natural realization that investing directly in bonds will trump funds, or complex structures like Principle Protected notes or insurance contracts. A product engineered by a financial institution will always be in the best interest of the institution, not the investor.

This book also strikes an unusually nice balance between comprehensive coverage of the subject and a style understandable to the average investor. As an Investment Advisor, I have given this book to my clients, and have got nothing but positive feedback. Keep up the good work Hank!

Alot has been added from the first edition which I also found very useful. This is the type of no-nonsense financial advice that Canadians need today. Should someone have heeded his advice they would have avoided the blowups in ABCP, and income trusts.

Highly recommended.

For anyone interested in Canadian market bond investing.
Well written, simple, and to the point. Very good insights from someone experienced in the field. He gives many tips and points of advice as well as good perspective on the new "products" (read ABCP) that come up from time to time in the fixed income market place and what to watch for. Very valuable is his comparison of online Canadian brokerage accounts and the typical markups on bonds (ie. the hidden commission that is never disclosed) one should expect. This alone was something I had not been able to find in any other media source except his book. For this reason alone I would buy the book.
Finding good information for "retail" (small) bond investors is tough; this book is it. I've signed it out twice from the library now, and decided I should actually purchase a copy (the 3rd edition when it comes out in 2012). The financial industry does not promote individual bond investing but the majority of the funds of the big boys is not in the equity market, it is in the bond market....this was a very interesting statistic from the book.
It was because of help from books like this one and the old Financial
Times/Globe and Mail Fixed Income guide that retail investors can begin to piece things together and we can begin to make informed decisions.

This book is very insightful into the often obscure world of the bond market. I am an experienced financial professional, and I thought it was one of the most practical books that an investor can read. Even though I am primarily an equity investor, this book has great insights and should be read by anyone that is thinking about retirement.

I borrowed the book from local library and then decided to buy one. I am particularly interested the stripped bond part in this book. I learned one investment strategy from this book. I bought stripped bond for my children's RESP and invest the difference between purchase price and face value on equity.

This basic guide is a good introduction to the bond market and the reasons why an investor would want to own bonds. A person that has taken the Canadian Securities course will find the book a review but Hank Cunningham does a good job of explaining the concept of duration.
