A stainless mug is a vacuum insulated mug that is designed to drink directly from the mug. Although similar to travel mugs, it offers better heat retention because of its tight fitting lid, and can be stored in a bag or purse without spilling.

How does it keep beverages hot?

The air between two thin layers of stainless steel that make up the body of the mug is removed to create a vacuum. Because there is no air, the temperature on the other side of the wall does not transfer over, keeping

beverages hot or cold for hours.

The Story About Zojirushi

Zojirushi (pronounced ‘zoh-jee-ROO-shee’) began in Japan in 1918 as a manufacturer of hand-blown glass vacuum bottles. Today, Zojirushi’s product line extends to high-end small appliances such as rice cookers, bread makers and coffee makers, high quality vacuum insulated products like vacuum bottles, lunch jars and carafes, and commercial restaurant and coffee equipment. In the past few years, Zojirushi has enhanced the focus on design and how appliances fit into everyday lives with the introduction of a variety of new products. The name Zojirushi means 'Elephant brand' in Japanese.

I've been a coffee drinker for many years, and although it's easy enough to make at home, finding that perfect travel mug to take my coffee with me has always proved challenging. All I can say is that I *wish* I had a Zojirushi travel mug during my four years of university.

:::PROS:::

- Easy to clean: I cannot emphasize enough what a relief it is to have an easy-to-clean travel mug. I've owned several Contigo mugs in the past, but since you cannot disassemble the lid, cleaning the mug is an absolute nightmare. You would need a tiny little brush and lots of patience to get leftover, grimy cream out of the lid. I would sometimes soak the lid overnight in soap and baking soda to get the grime and smell out but with limited success. With the Zojirushi, the lid completely comes apart which makes it very easy to clean.

- Matte black finish: The mug looks sleek and feels very nice to hold onto. While other mugs are shiny and slippery when wet, the matte finish on the Zojirushi gives you a good grip and makes it aesthetically pleasing to look at.

- Keeps your drink hot for longer: Similar travel mugs also keep your coffee hot for a long time, but the Zojirushi performs exceptionally well. By the time my coffee would have normally been cold/room temperature, it tastes like its hot out of the percolator over an hour later.

- Pours nicely: The plastic, removable spout on the inside of the cap is very pleasant to pour. It rests nicely on your lower lip, and you always get a nice, even pour that doesn't feel like you're drinking out of a funnel.

:::CONS:::

- The price: This mug is very expensive. At almost $40, the Zojirushi is 2 to 4x more expensive than its competitors (but rightfully so in my opinion). I have owned several Contigo mugs in the past, all of which I've given away after being frustrated with cleaning them. I do not see myself replacing this mug any time soon, and I'm sure serious coffee drinkers would agree.

- The open button is awkwardly positioned: The opening mechanism that you compress to pop the lid can feel like its in the way when you're drinking. The button will rest between your mouth and chin, while your lip will rest between the button and spout. This can feel a little uncomfortable at first, but if you can get used to it, its still a great quality mug.

:::OVERALL:::

Clearly, the pros outweigh the cons when it comes to the Zojirushi. This mug is very expensive compared to its competitors, but you likely won't be replacing it as you would with other brands. The quality construction of this mug, in addition to its easy to pour and clean features, ranks it higher than any mug I've used in the past. If you frequently take coffee with you on the go to work or school, I would highly recommend paying a bit more for a Zojirushi mug.

I found it confusing with all the zojirushi models out there. landed on this travel-style thermos, wide mouth, metal interior (not coated). it’s been about a month & I love this model. it’s slim so it fits in really any cup-holder. holds much more than appears due to streamline design. leakproof was my #1 criteria b/c this would be stored inside my knapsack. even running around, so far not 1 drop leaks. coffee remains hot-hot for 5-6 hours. some people complain that it’s not drinkable from spout due to heat - I find if you do it slowly/carefully it’s fine. I also pour into a mug at the office. no exterior scratches or dents so far - but I keep it inside my bag, and haven’t dropped it yet. I wash all pieces separately with dish soap after each use (3-4x weekly) and no stains to plastic or metal - there’s a bit of coffee odour. totally worth every penny. will update this review if anything degrades over time.

I don't know what the coatings on the outside but it feels like a premium product, and it performed amazing, the lid is very well made and is leak proof, it also has a lock just in case you press the open button by mistake not that is likely to happen. It felt comfortable to hold and it feels cool to the touch with no radiating heat. And finally the main point of keeping my coffee hot for hours this product just blew my mind, I have done alot of hours recently and on one occasion I left the fladk/mug at my office full of hot coffee and then forgot to grab it when I went home leaving it overnight for a full 24 hours. I had no expectations that the contents would be warm let alone hot so you can imagine how stunned I was that when I emptie the coffee was still hot. I can't recommend this enough but also aware it's seems alot for a travel mug.
