HASH(0x9de2d0e4) out of 5 stars decent short story Nov. 7 2012

This is a pretty decent short story although some editing needs to be done. The characters are introduced quickly and without much depth and the story as a whole could use more substance. Read it while its free if you have a spare 10 minutes or so and really love anything about zombies.

*I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review*

The Zombie Dash 10k race is a chance for runners to run through zombie infested woods where volunteers dressed as zombies try to grab flags off their back. Losing a flag costs time to be added at the finish. At first it is all fun with giggling zombies and mock screams of horror until the big clown zombie targets Becca with real menace and drags her away...

I have always wanted to get involved in these zombie races as it looks like a really good laugh-I'd have to be a shambling zombie though as I can't run for a bus, never mind 10k! So this story idea appealed to me when I saw it. You can imagine the atmosphere...runners pretending to scream and yell with fear, volunteers yelling 'braiiiinnnsss!' and trying to grab them without cracking up laughing and everyone having a great time. Nobody is going to notice real screams when one zombie is trying to attack a girl for real and everyone ignores her friend yelling for help and chasing them into the dark woods...

I liked this story. It had the fun of the race and then the tension and the menace of the zombie clown. I mean, clowns are bad enough but zombie clowns really are a twisted invention! I liked the plot twists that kept on coming, starting with the identity of the attacker and his reasons for doing it. You do have hints about this in the early part of the book so if you're paying attention you'll be expecting this but it is still fun waiting for the reveal. I really enjoyed what came it the twist after the reveal! It would spoil the story if I tell you but it was a good ending.

I could see a follow up story, beginning where this left off and if it comes I would certainly read it. It is a light zombie read that is entertaining and nicely written.

I rate this book 3.5 out of 5 on my star rating which is different to this site.

HASH(0x9de2d570) out of 5 stars You don't want to be in this zombie dash, nope! Great short story. Oct. 22 2014

You want to know how much I love Mark Matthew's books? I have never read a Zombie book in my life and always said I never would, but I was curious to see what spin on the zombies Mark would add, so I plunged into this short story wondering if I was a fool for breaking my "no zombies every" rule.

This was a really good short story. Runners are geared up for running in what is meant to be a fun "Zombie Dash" race, where "zombies" grab a flag from them and they lose minutes off their final time if "caught", the zombies are cleverly dressed up people, it's all fun and games.

There are ways to survive the zombie apocalypse, and one is to make sure it is others who get eaten. all goes horribly, tragically, horrifically wrong.

Suddenly the race is not so much fun and for a few of the competitors this race takes a very sinister twist.

This was a super-sonic zombie made of new drugs and Danny Boyle style, so I ran. I sprinted. I hauled ass running on the tips of my shoes like a 5 year old child after the ice cream man.

It's 24 pages long, a short but worthy read for those that like a zombie theme. I actually really liked it, but don't tell anyone I read a zombie story okay? I will never, ever live it down.

As a runner who has done zombie races, I found this story a nice well paved read. Great interplay between the games and the others....nice job!
