A speed bag should rebound three times for every time it is hit, allowing you to get into a smooth rhythm. Stand square to the speed bag, keep your hands close to it and work on developing a right-right-left-left rhythm of hitting. Trainers often recommend that novices should hit the speed bag with the flat or side of their hands to begin with, while gradually working up to punching it.
