What materials are coolers and cool bags made from?
There is a surprising range of materials used for cool boxes and cool bags that go beyond the traditional hard plastic of the larger models. Insul-Bright is a type of material that is very good for both hot and cold food as it has hollow fibres that means the hot or cold is reflected back, keeping food or drink at an ideal temperature.
Most people will recognise the Insul-Shine material even if you don’t know the name. This popular type of thermal padding, along with Insul-Fab, is usually sewn into a cool bag and used for food storage. For thinner bags and designs, bag insulation fabric has tiny microfibers that do the same job as most other thermal fabrics but are just a lot thinner in size and can be used for more discreet picnics or cool bags. Plastic cool boxes are usually made using hard foam in-between the harder plastics and in some cases, polystyrene foam is used, although these are often not as durable as other cool box materials.
