From the Back Cover
When sophomores John and Lorraine played a practical joke a few months ago on a stranger named Angelo Pignati, they had no idea what they were starting. Virtually overnight, almost against their will, the two befriended the lonely old man; it wasn't long before they were more comfortable in his house than their own. But now Mr. Pignati is dead. And for John and Lorraine, the only way to find peace is to write down their friend's story -- the story of the Pigman.

Overall, almost a decade after graduating high school, I still appreciated the plot and the characters that Zindel created. I'm not ashamed to admit that I shed a tear when I reached the end.

John and Lorraine, and their two other friends, Norton Kelly and Dennis Kobin, meet up and decide to make prank phone calls. Lorraine picks out Mr. Pignati and pretends to be calling from a charity. Mr. Pignati agrees to give them a donation of $10. John and Lorraine decide to go to Mr. Pignati's house to collect the donation. From the first time they meet Mr. Pignati they become great friends, and Mr. Pignati takes up a great role of being a father-figure for them.
John and Lorraine visits become very frequently, and they adapt a very strong relationship with Mr. Pignati. One day John and Lorraine discover documents that prove the death of Mrs. Pignati, and that she isn't just on vacation, which Mr. Pignati had told them previously. John and Lorraine decide to tell Mr. Pignati the truth about them not really being in need of any charity, and Mr. Pignati tells them that his wife had really died, a short time before.
Mr. Pignati care for them, and treats them like his own children. The three of them create a really strong relationship, and Mr. Pignati helps them discover the true meaning of friendship. Mr. Pignati helps John and Lorraine discover the love that they have for each other, and what love is. Mr. Pignati helps these troubled teenagers, and cares for them truly.
Throughout the story the chain of events begin to get unleashed and the story gets more interesting. John and Lorraine write the book to tell over all the good times that they had with Mr. Pignati, and to cover up some of the guilt which they feel.
The Pigman is a great book for teenagers, it corresponds to many teenagers lives, and teaches some very strong lessons. I suggest you to read The Pigman, there is a lot to learn from this book.
John and Lorraine frequently play telephone pranks with their only friends Norton and Dennis, that's how they get to know Mr. Pignati.
They lie to him and act like charity workers, so Mr. Pignati invites them to his house to give them a donation. After a while they're sorry and reveal the secret.
Since then John and Lorraine visit him more often and it develops into a good friendship. Mr. Pignati and the teenagers can talk about everything and because of their problems at home Mr. Pignati becomes like a second father for them.
They become like a little family, even though they have to handle harsh situations and through all their adventures John and Lorraine become closer to each other.
We read the novel in class and when I first heard about it I was a bit skeptical, because I couldn't imagine the content. I thought ''What is a Pigman?'', but after I started reading the novel I kind of liked it. It wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. Normally the novels I read in school aren't my favorite target group, but I really enjoy 'coming-of-age stories' a lot. It isn't my favorite book in the whole world, but it was quiet nice. Some parts were funny but also sentimental.
The narrative perspective changes between John and Lorraine, which gives a lot of insight of the characters, their feelings and problems.
The story is interesting but it doesn't have a real highlight in my opinion. I also don't really like that the novel has an open end, so nobody knows what happens between John and Lorraine.
All in all I think the book is nice and easy to read.
I would recommend it to everyone who likes 'coming-of-age stories'.
