I would not recommend this type of book for 9 year olds. It's long winded,big complicated words and if you don't know the bible you really just don't understand. I spent most of my time explaining. We're struggling to get through this one.

As a hopeless romantic, I was sure the book, Jacob Have I Loved, promised a beautiful love story between a woman and, of course, Jacob. Katherine Paterson had something else in store for me when she gave the story of Sara Louise Bradshaw, an adolescent growing up according to the restrictions and confinements placed on women in the 1940's on this small island. An outcast, Sarah Louise Bradshaw, or Wheeze, undergoes many changes during her adolescent life but is discouraged to talk about many of her feelings, in particular her sexual feelings, because the message for women in this society taught her to remain silent. According to Tolman's and Scalacha's article, Dimensions of Desire, "girls' experience of sexuality and sexual desire in particular are a significant, allbeit neglected, force in girls' development and as such are potentially crucial in girl's developing a sense of entitlement and empowerment." (Tolman and Szalacha 8) Wheeze is a prime example of this neglected force. She feels as if she is not entitled to her sexual desires because she was raised to suppress her feelings when she first experiences them. Louise's feelings are suppressed when she notices herself being fascinated with her friend, the captain. He is an older man and though this could be observed as a harmless crush, she allows herself to feel guilty. She looks at his hands and thinks they are beautiful. She thinks about him more than she used to and she finds herself wanting to spend time with him. She feels an attraction that she is not used to and it frightens her. Louise felt what so many girls feel at that age but because no one has ever talked to her about it, she assumed it was a sin. "I knew that anything that made a person feel the way I felt at that moment had to be a deadly sin." (132) Women dared not talk about their sexuality at this time. She felt powerless on this island and that her "sin" was only going to push her back even more. Instead, she keeps her thoughts to herself and spends this crucial time in a woman's development alone. Louise spends most of her life feeling alone, though she is not literally alone. She is constantly being compared to her twin sister, Caroline, for her beauty, her singing, and her lady like behavior. Wheeze, on the other hand, speaks her mind, prefers crabbing with her father, and enjoys reading books other than the bible. Wheeze struggles like all adolescent girls, yet she has no outlet for her frustration because, according to her grandmother, it is not appropriate for a girl to feel the way she does. Her grandmother's constant nagging and judging others is the reason Louise struggles with many issues. Her suppression comes from her fear of damnation.
"Momma, I wanted to cry out, tell me I'm not in danger of hell fire. My childhood nightmares of damnation were rising fast, but there was no place for me to run. How could I share with my mother the wildness of my body or the desperation of my mind?" "Feminist scholars have theorized how patriarchal suppression of female sexuality is a key aspect of women's oppression...Buried within an ostensibly objective stance is the historical denial and denigration of female adolescent sexuality." (Tolman 8) Louise is scared to tell her mother because she has spent so many years watching her mother be called a whore by the grandmother, though she had no grounds to do so. She has no positive reinforcement because her mother is also an example of this suppression of female sexuality. Her mother is her only teacher so Wheeze learns about this suppression early by observing her mother and grandmother. Therefore, Wheeze has to hide her feelings and spend her days feeling inferior and dirty for her feelings until she finally escapes the island. This escape is what makes Paterson's book so inspiring, to adolescents and adults alike. I felt the hurt Wheeze felt from her family, I fell in love when Wheeze fell in love, I lost hope and found it again as Wheeze did. I couldn't put the book down until I knew Wheeze had escaped the island because she showed that adolescents, especially females, can overcome suppression, they can escape restrictions, and they can make things happen.

Louise hates her twin sister Caroline Bradshaw. They live in a small Chesapeake Bay island, Rass Island, in the mid 1900's. Caroline is loved by everyone because of her sweetness and voice, and Sara Louise is always ignored, even her family always ignores her. This book is the story of the twin's lives. When Sara Louise, also called "Wheeze" was 14 years old, she wanted to own a boat and be just like her father, but at Rass Island, women are not allowed to own boats, they are housewives. Louise goes with her best guy friend Call, who is also always ignored, to look for crabs and make money off them. They stay with half of the profit and give the other half to their families.
One day when Louise was helping her mom and Caroline with the groceries, a weird man came out of the ferry. Only the old people knew him. His name was "Hiram Wallace" and Louise did not believe that he was the real Hiram Wallace; she thought he was a spy. Call and Louise visited Hiram Wallace, the captain, every day. And as each day passed he convinced them he was Hiram Wallace. Hiram Wallace was the Captain Wallace son, who died a long time ago. He was coming to the island because his father's house was still there. Later on Caroline started visiting the captain. Louise fell in love with him. The captain was a 70-year-old man! A hurricane came to Rass Island and the captain had to stay at the Bradshaw's house because his house flew away. Louise's grandmother did not want the captain there because he was sleeping in her bed and she knew Louise had fallen in love with him. So, the captain decided to leave and got married to Auntie Braxton because he realized they needed each other. Auntie needed someone to take care of her since she was sick, and the captain needed a home. Auntie Braxton died and left lots of money to the captain. The captain said that since Auntie loved hearing Caroline sing that she would love for him to use the money to send Caroline to Baltimore Boarding school and continue singing. That's what Caroline had always wanted but her parents did not have the money. What about Louise? Cant her wish also come true?
Louise missed Call, since she only saw him on Sundays at church. He was becoming a real waterman. One afternoon Louise heard her grandmother say, "Jacob have a loved, but Essau have I hated." Which has to do with this twins from the bible like Caroline and Louise. Jacob was the hated one. Louise came with the conclusion that God hated her. She decided not to pay much attention to school and do what she wanted, which was to pay more attention to the water. She was becoming a man while Caroline was in Baltimore. Louise's mom offered her to go to Crisfield, but Louise got it the wrong way and thought her family wanted to get rid of her, since God already hated her. AT age 17 Caroline and Call got married in New York for Christmas and Louise parents went to the wedding. Louise stayed with her grandmother in the island. For Christmas, the captain went to have dinner with them and convinced Louise to go study what she really wanted to which was to be a doctor. When Louise told her mom, her mom said she would miss her even more than Caroline. Louise went to study nursing to a mountainous island, which was her dream. So later in the future she could study to be a doctor. Her grandmother, the captain, and her father died while she was in this island. The only persons funeral she could not go to was her fathers. What happened to her in the island? Did she have a better life?
This has been one of the best books I have ever read, since it is a total page-turner. The best thing about the book is that if you don't understand something, it will be explained later in the book, so you will not miss any special details

I read this book a number of years ago. I enjoyed it just as much now as I did before, but have a couple misgivings. This story is set in the 1940's, and follows the teen years and early adult years of Sara Louise Bradshaw. Sara Louise has grown up in the shadow of her fraternal twin sister Caroline, who is beautiful, gregarious, and musically talented. The family lives in a small island community in the Chesapeake Bay. Caroline is extremely popular in this setting, and Sara Louise feels less-than. Their parents are kind, loving and understanding, if not a little passive. The difficulty is that the girl's paternal grandmother lives with them. Grandma is caustic, bitter, mean-spirited and just hateful. Growing up with her would give anyone psychological issues! I can't understand why these nice parents allow this cruel woman to live in their home and harrass everyone. There are very few boundaries. This is evidenced not only by their grandmother's free reign, but also Caroline's take-over ways. She has been allowed to ride roughshod over Sara Louise, and this continues throughout the book. Caroline gets her way constantly, often at Sara Louise's expense. She horns in on Sara Louise's friendships and plans. Meanwhile, Grandma grows crazier as the years pass. She begins to compare the twins to Jacob and Esau in the Bible, implying that Caroline is the chosen one, and Sara Louise is hated by God. This causes Sara-Louise to turn her back on God and her faith. She grows up to discover that her parents do value her, and that she has been the one holding herself back. She goes to college, becomes a nurse, marries, and settles in the Appalachia mountains. She is happy in her life, and has made peace with her past. Sadly, the only part of it she doesn't make peace with is God. That was a disappointment. I'm not sure if the author was trying to give a message against faith. The book demonstrates a strong knowledge of both Catholic and Protestant beliefs. I dislike how the grandmother knows the Bible so well, but uses it as a weapon. Still an enjoyable read.

This is a really powerful book. The story line is engaging; the setting and characters are fully is 3-dimensional. It is told "in real time" but by the narrator looking back on her early teenage years. It is also clear that she misinterprets or filters events through her pain. In short, it is a story of the extraordinary damage sibling favortism by parents does to a child, who carries it forever into adulthood, but it also is a story of how the central figure made her own life out of the scraps her family gave her. It is more uplifting than my review makes it sound, and more interesting for the details of her life that would be worth reading even without the sibling rivalry theme running throughout. I highly recommend the book.

Paterson captures the inner turmoil and hurt of the lesser-loved, plainer, and less-obviously gifted twin, Sara Louise ("Wheezy"), growing up on a remote island in the Chesapeake Bay in the 1940s. Caroline, her musically talented, beautiful, and spoiled sister has stolen the spotlight ever since birth, having been born fragile and sickly. Boredom, longing, psychic pain, and rage are exquisitely described yet there is humor - especially in the protagonist's interactions with McCall, the dunderheaded boy with whom Sara Louise shares many adventures. In the end, though Sara Louise is thwarted from her ideal career (due to being female ), she achieves one she can be proud of along with - at long last - love and acceptance in her personal life. I enjoy how this author is able to detail her characters's feelings with depth, intensity, and great honesty.

This was my second reading of this great novel by Katherine Paterson. I read it 20 years ago and enjoyed it, and re-read it a few weeks ago before taking a trip to the Chesapeake Islands of MD and VA. This is a story of life on a small island where residents had lived for centuries, enduring the harsh elements of sea, sun and storms, and earning their living from the sea. The characters are very well developed, and a glimpse into a life that does not get much attention in the mainstream USA was compelling. Having read this story again, I felt prepared for my visit and the lives lived by the locals whom I met. I was able to ask intelligent questions about their lifestyle, and to thoroughly enjoy myself on my visit.

The prologue was somewhat clunky, but once you're in the the first few chapters, this story just gets better and better. I would say this book would be good for young adults and older. This is a coming of age story, not a romance. The title of this book confused me. However, about 3/4 of the way though, it becomes apparent that this is a fitting title, though not in a way I expected. This would be an interesting book for a book club, as it's sure to bring about a variety of discussions. I really enjoyed this read, even got a little misty eyed. The characters are vivid and realistic.
