Purchase options and add-ons
An award-winning novel about the resilience of the human spirit, the power of duty, the fragile relationship between humans and nature, and the sacrifices we make for family.
Mary Call has promised her dying father to keep her brother and sisters together forever in their home in the Great Smoky Mountains, and to never to take any help from strangers. She is determined to keep her word—and her pride. No matter what.
At first she is sure she can manage. Romey, Ima Dean, and Devola help gather herbs to sell in town; the riches of the mountains will surely keep the family clothed and fed. But when winter comes, fast and furious, Mary Call learns that the land where the lilies bloom can be a cruel and unforgiving place, and it will take more than a promise to keep her family together.
This classic coming of age story explores issues of poverty, character, and perseverance. A strong option for classroom, homeschool, or independent reading.

This book is as close as Western literature gets to a Zen koen. It asks questions about the reader which take years, maybe decades to answer.
While its target is the early teen academic market it is clearly wasted on the average student. Thank God that some schools still formulate a goal of challenging the best of our future minds! Someone still has to learn how to read real literature lest we end this next century watching Bradbury's firemen on the boob tube.
For girls, it teaches "can-do" through Mary Call's example of strength against adversity. May also have appeal to people interested in "wildcrafting" (herbs, roots).
I don't really like this book because it was boring. Also because this is like a typical story. I am more iterested in fantasy, and wierd books but not scary books. I kid of like this book too because I like the way how Mary Call took care of the family on her own. She was only fourteen and she has to take care of 3 children.
The reason that I chose this book is because of its cover. The first reason because the cover is new. I enjoy books that have new covers. The second reason is because the picture on the cover was interesting. It was a picture of a girl holding a baskets of plants and behind her were mountains. The background scene was colorful and pretty.
Despite the book's shortcomings, three stars are merited because I really admired Mary Call's determination and spirit and the way she never gave up. She was not afraid to stand up for herself or for her family. If I had read this book two years ago, I think I would have liked it much more.
