Monique Wittig (1935-2003) was a French avant-garde writer and feminist theorist. Her early novel L’Opoponax won the prix Médicis. David Le Vay has translated numerous books, including Wittig's The Lesbian Body.

Through a series of dazzling prose poems, Wittig tells the tale of a tribe of women warriors overthrowing patriarchy, and she challenges gender constructs through her language. It's a powerful and inspirational book about sex warfare, rather like "The Handmaid's Tale" or some songs by Tori Amos. A definite radical feminist classic worth reading and re-reading.

This book challenges the concept of language and the traditional style of writing. It reads like a long poem and Wittig uses untraditional language to convey a very untraditional story. It leaves you with the feeling that nothing like it has ever been done before and it forces you to create worlds inside your head. I cannot respond sufficiently to this book in words... you MUST read it.

Les Guerilleres in my opinion is outdated and boring and probably never was much more than a radical feminist fantasy albeit composed when it really did take more than a little courage to crank out such a thing. Might make a good graphic novel but as a stand alone piece? You could probably do better wandering into a feminist, anarchist or lesbian run bookstore and having a conversation. It's probably historically noteworthy as literature because it is certainly well and clearly written and a slap to smug Euro-faces. Wittig comes off as completely unaware of previous radical, revolutionary writing or of actual women warrior/soldiers as, for example, were critical to many African and South American revolutions.
