I saw the 1973 movie "Sunshine" when I was in my teens and it really moved me. I couldn't get it out of my thoughts. Finding the movie was next to impossible, but I did just find it. This movie follows the book almost to a tee. I would highly suggest this read...it will inspire you and make you weep. Based on a true story.

Sunshine is the tale of a young woman. She didnt have a very great family when she was growing up, and now she is happy with a man that she loves and a beautiful little girl, Jill. But then Kate, the main character, is diagnosed with an uncurable cancer, and she decides to go off the pills because of what they are turning her into. It is based on a true story of a woman that kept a tape recorded diary. She has to try to get as much done, and to live life to the fullest, in the very short time she has left to live. The friendly manner that the novel is written in makes it easy to understand Kate's feelings and views toward life and her disease. You will laugh and cry, and you will not be able to put down the book until you have reached the very end and read it twice more over again. It is such a riveting tale of a very brave woman who must do what she has to do before she dies. It made me cry, I only hope that you will be as touched with it. It gave me a whole new view on life and a feeling of how lucky i am to be living here today without a care or burden. A TRULY touching tale.....

This story of strength and courage of a struggling young mother and her hodge-podge family will break and warm your heart all at the same time. The story of a young mother with lots of life and the hardest trial imaginable has to pull through and discover what life really means. This is a novel that should inspire you and lend lessons useful not only in your life, but in the way you treat friends and family as well. You will laugh, love, and live with each of the characters and cry with them through every twist and turn. A great novel for anyone, but especially those who are uneasy at heart and question life constantly

Sunshine---a Book of Glad Sadness
Reviewed in the United States on March 7, 2015Verified Purchase
"Sunshine" is a novel based on the life of a real young mother, Jacquelyn "Lynn" Helton, who died in 1971 of osteogenic sarcoma at the age of 20. I watched the TV movie "Sunshine" and I read the story of Lynn Helton in "Reader's Digest" years ago, and I never forgot it. This book is about a young woman who loved life so much. She rejoiced in the fresh mountain air, the wildflowers in her hair, watching her baby daughter playing in the meadow under the sun with the husband she loved. It's a book that makes me weep over the sadness of a young life cut short by such a cruel disease. But the tears are ones of a "glad sadness" because Lynn lived life to the fullest as we all wish to do. She is now in a "place of brightness, a place of verdure, a place of repose, whence all sickness, sorrow, and sighing have fled away." Memory Eternal, Lynn.

Such a poignant story. My mother named me Sunshine after this book. I lost my copy when I was in my 20s and have been looking for one every since. It was in good condition when it arrived and I read it all in 2 days. Thanks so much!

I absolutely loved this movie in the 70’s, and was able to get a copy of the movie through “Sunshine Vintage Movies.” However, nothing like the book. The book is more in depth, and still holds a punch.
