A fresh as a daisy coming-of-age story for the pre-teen set, one of Newbery Medal-winning author Beverly Cleary’s beloved classics.
Barbara can hardly believe her older sister is getting married. With all the excitement of wedding plans going on, Barbara can't help dreaming of the day she will be the bride. She can't wait to fall in love.
But as the big day gets closer, wedding planning often turns into family arguments. Even the bride and groom are bickering over details, and Barbara's fun-loving sister is turning into a very practical, grown-up person.
Weddings are fun, but all this serious stuff is scary enough to make Barbara think she's not going to be rushing into a serious romance any time soon.

About the Author
Beverly Cleary is one of America's most beloved authors. As a child, she struggled with reading and writing. But by third grade, after spending much time in her public library in Portland, Oregon, she found her skills had greatly improved. Before long, her school librarian was saying that she should write children's books when she grew up.
Instead she became a librarian. When a young boy asked her, "Where are the books about kids like us?" she remembered her teacher's encouragement and was inspired to write the books she'd longed to read but couldn't find when she was younger. She based her funny stories on her own neighborhood experiences and the sort of children she knew. And so, the Klickitat Street gang was born!
Mrs. Cleary's books have earned her many prestigious awards, including the American Library Association's Laura Ingalls Wilder Award, presented to her in recognition of her lasting contribution to children's literature. Dear Mr. Henshaw won the Newbery Medal, and Ramona Quimby, Age 8 and Ramona and Her Father have been named Newbery Honor Books. Her characters, including Beezus and Ramona Quimby, Henry Huggins, and Ralph, the motorcycle-riding mouse, have delighted children for generations.

Barbara learns from her sister that no sooner has she been in college before she's engaged. She must keep it a secret though from Mother and Dad until Rosemary comes home that Friday, and then she'll spring it on the folks. Barbara agrees, and the dreamy, imaginative fifteen year old begins thinking about her own love: deciding between the shy Tootie Bodger and the exciting Bill Cunningham. Should she go out with someone who is too shy for her or someone who could earn the family nickname of a "cunning ham"? Barbara doesn't know.
But between wedding preparations, meeting the in-laws, and a whole lot more things going on, Barbara learns a lot of things about herself and about life - as sister of the bride.
I have read all four books of first love by Beverly Cleary and this is the only book that I give 3 stars- the others are all 4's or 5's. It becomes boring after quite some time. After all, who wants to hear about the Amys' shower? That part was boring. But overall you can find an enjoyable read in this, although it is mediocre.
