About the Author

Simon Doonan is the author of several books, including Wacky Chicks, Confessions of a Window Dresser, and Beautiful People, which was adapted for television in the UK. Originally from England, he worked on Savile Row before becoming the creative director for Barneys New York, where he designed legendary window displays for more than twenty years. Formerly a columnist for The New York Observer, he is now a contributor to Slate.com, and has appeared on Gossip Girl, Iron Chef America, America's Next Top Model, and elsewhere. Doonan lives in New York with his husband, Jonathan Adler.

Simon Doonan is the author of many books, including the recently published Transformer: A Story of Glitter, Glam Rock and Loving Lou Reed, How To Be Yourself, DRAG: The Complete Story and Keith Haring. A long-standing member of the fashion community, Simon was awarded the prestigious CFDA award for his work as Creative Director for Barneys New York. He is currently a judge on the Emmy-nominated NBC series ‘Making It’. Simon lives in New York City with his partner, the ceramicist and designer Jonathan Adler, and their rescue-mutt Foxylady.

I loved the first few chapters of this book so much that I took it on a car trip with my sister and read it out loud to her and we laughed so hard we thought we were going to have to pull off the road. The rest of the book was so-so, but we both agreed that the first few chapters were worth every penny spent. I find myself still smiling on the perspective the writer gave --- love the description of the gay man at the BBQ not fitting in with the other men.

I agree that this book isn't as charming as some of Doonan's other writing, but it's still funny. The tone can be nasty at times in a way that can exclude the reader, which, as a writing style, I frankly don't understand. Nevertheless, one expects Doonan to be saucy and this book certainly is. The writing on which foods are gay, straight, or lesbian was hilarious, and I'm reminded of it all of the time. My tip: get it used and pay just a few bucks for it. This is good for an airplane or a night in but not a real keeper.

Never saw any of his windows in person but his real talent is story telling and communicating. A very entertaining book full of sweet memories, and crazy adventures. Just wish it were longer and told more about the people he worked with.
