About the author

Lois Duncan (1934-2016) was born in Philadelphia, PA, and grew up in Sarasota, FL.
She knew from early childhood that she wanted to be a writer. She submitted her first story to a magazine at age 10 and became published at 13. Throughout her high school years she wrote regularly for young people's publications, particularly Seventeen.
As an adult, Lois moved to Albuquerque, NM, where she taught magazine writing for the Journalism Department at the University of New Mexico and continued to write for magazines. Over 300 of her articles and stories appeared in such publications as Ladies Home Journal, Redbook, McCall's, Good Housekeeping, and Reader's Digest, and for many years she was a contributing editor for Woman's Day.
Lois was the author of over 50 books, ranging from children's picture books to poetry to adult non-fiction, but is best known for her young adult suspense novels, which have received Young Readers Awards in 16 states and three foreign countries. In 1992, Lois was awarded the Margaret A. Edwards Award, presented by the School Library Journal and the ALA Young Adult Library Services Association for "a distinguished body of adolescent literature." In 2009, she received the Katharine Drexel Award, awarded by the Catholic Library Association "to recognize an outstanding contribution by an individual to the growth of high school and young adult librarianship and literature." In 2015 she was named a Grand Master by the Mystery Writers of America.
Six of her novels -- SUMMER OF FEAR, KILLING MR. GRIFFIN, GALLOWS HILL, RANSOM, DON'T LOOK BEHIND YOU and STRANGER WITH MY FACE -- were made-for-TV movies. I KNOW WHAT YOU DID LAST SUMMER and HOTEL FOR DOGS were box office hits.
Although young people are most familiar with Lois Duncan's fictional suspense novels, adults may know her best as the author of WHO KILLED MY DAUGHTER?, the true story of the murder of Kaitlyn Arquette, the youngest of Lois's five children. Kait's heartbreaking story has been featured on such TV shows as Unsolved Mysteries, Good Morning America, Larry King Live, Sally Jessy Raphael and Inside Edition. A full account of the family's on-going personal investigation of this still unsolved homicide can be found on the Internet at http://kaitarquette.arquettes.com.

The teens have a big end of summer party that Laurie is unable to attend because she has a type of flu. However, the gang appears really angry at her because they claim she didn't attend because she was walking the beach with a new boyfriend. Laurie knows that this didn't happen because she was sick in bed. However, two of her friends claim they saw her walking on the beach.
Things start to get really spooky when her father then claims to see her in the house when she was at school and then Laurie's sister claims that she was floating outside her high window looking in. To top it off, Laurie senses that another girl was in her room sitting on her bed and looking at some of her things. Then Laurie catches her own reflection in a window with a smile, while Laurie knows she wasn't smiling.
Laurie then meets a new girl, Helen, who is from Arizona and definitely not the type of person that Laurie's "friends" would want to know. Helen happens to be real nice and soon becomes Laurie's best friend. Laurie opens up to Helen about all the mysterious things that have been happening to her and Helen suggests it may have to do with astral projection because she knew a Navaho chief who could do that.
More intrigue and surprises abound in this well written semi-thriller. To tell any more would give away some of the suspense but Ms. Duncan does an excellent job throughout and the reader should finish this book rather quickly. A great book that you should be able to read in no more than two sittings.
Laurie was at home, but her boyfriend swears he saw her on the beach with another guy. Her family insists they see her coming and going when she's been out of the house for hours. Who--or what--is taking over Laurie's life?
A short blurb on the front cover proclaims: "Someone is watching Laurie, waiting to steal her life." How could any young reader resist such a line? When I picked up this book I couldn't.
Stranger with My Face, told in first person, starts off more as though it's going to be a thriller than a fantasy. But as the fantasy element strengthens it becomes steadily scarier, building into a terrifying climax that makes for an exciting, unputdownable read.
This book is definitely intended for young adults (after all, the protagonist is 17 years old) but I suspect most readers will be a lot younger. Few 12-year-olds can resist a really scary story. I certainly couldn't. I remember reading Jane Eyre (one of the few good books to come my way, purely by accident) and it was the mad woman in the attic rather than the hopeless love between Jane and her employer that kept me turning the pages. :-)
Many of the reviews here, I feel, give away too much of the plot. But I particularly like Heidi Lott's review and envy the fact that she obviously had someone around when she was young to point her in the direction of the best books for young readers. Like Heidi, I would also recommend Stranger with My Face to any adult who loves a good story well told.

Lois Duncan did a great job with this book. This book is really exciting and scary. Laurie is a 17 year old girl who lives on Brighton Island, she has a perfect life so far she has a cool boyfriend, a great family and good friends. Unfortunately she doesn't know that her identical twin sister Lia wants her body. Laurie and Lia were twin sisters and they were exactly identical except Lurie was good and Lia was evil. Lia tried to get into Laurie's body and take control by Astral Projection. Lia got into Laurie's body and started taking over her life, she hurt her best friend also her boyfriend. Laurie is now scared of losing her body.
I really liked the part when Laurie is being accused of something's such as, when she was home in her bed her boyfriend sweared he saw her at the beach with another guy. Even her parents saw her coming back and forth in the house when she was in school. She gets really mad and things just get bad for her. Its even more scarier when Laurie starts believing that someone came in her room and just left. When she was about to go to sleep she was frowning in the mirror but her reflection was smiling. I liked the quote when her boyfriend says, "During the band intermission, I went outside to get some air. The moon was bright, and i saw you." I like this quote because it gets the story started.
The quote which really freaked me out was by Lia, "Good night, Laurie. Good night and good bye." This quote was really scary and cool. Laurie was really intimidated by Lia, Lia was ruining Laurie's body by getting into it and doing bad deeds so it looks like Laurie did it. This book is really cool and very exciting and always keeps you want to read more.
My favorite part of the book was when Lia or Laurie did the Astral Projection. It was very cool and scary because you get out of your body and go to someone else's. My other favorite part of the book was when Laurie was happy that her and Gordon didn't break up, but she was scared and when she looked in the mirror she had a frown but her reflection was smiling. That is really scary. I enjoyed this book and will give it a 4 star.

1) unnecessary scene additions. These are mainly dialogue-heavy scenes explaining the characters' feelings and actions. The original was perfectly clear and I never puzzled over any of them there.
2) unnecessary character change. Helen's mother is turned into a nasty shrew for no discernible reason.
3) poor editing. This edition gives off the strong impression that it was the edition initially handed over from the author to an editor. The editor worked his/her magic, and the original version was published. I wish they had left it at that. With the small exception of updating for the mention of cell phones, nothing in this edition is better than the original. Reading it made me long for a good editor.
4) false advertising. As far as I am concerned, this is the most annoying and deceptive feature. I went back over the entire page for the Kindle edition. If there is anything there indicating that this edition has been changed from the original, it is so subtle that I missed it. I want to know the truth when I purchase something from amazon. In this case, I suspect it is the publisher that is being deceptive. Shame on them. I'm going to be far more wary of ordering anything old that has just turned up on Kindle from now on.
I do recommend this book for its excellent plot, writing, and characters. But you will be far better off purchasing a used paperback edition of the original work.
High schooler Laurie Stratton is having the best summer of her young life -- until her popular boyfriend accuses her of seeing her out on a night she is supposedly home sick. She begins to hear of more of these sightings until she sees one for herself -- the astral projection of her twin, a twin she never knew she had. Her life begins to unravel as she tries to simultaneously learn more about her unknown sister, while trying to protect herself against accidents happening in her life.
Fans of thrillers will enjoy this book.
I tried to just get a sample of this book first & I don't know why but it wouldn't come through so I bought it & am so glad I did! It kept me in suspense until I finally finished it.
I loved it!!
