Ursula Kroeber Le Guin (US /ˈɜːrsələ ˈkroʊbər ləˈɡwɪn/; born October 21, 1929) is an American author of novels, children's books, and short stories, mainly in the genres of fantasy and science fiction. She has also written poetry and essays. First published in the 1960s, her work has often depicted futuristic or imaginary alternative worlds in politics, the natural environment, gender, religion, sexuality and ethnography.

She influenced such Booker Prize winners and other writers as Salman Rushdie and David Mitchell – and notable science fiction and fantasy writers including Neil Gaiman and Iain Banks. She has won the Hugo Award, Nebula Award, Locus Award, and World Fantasy Award, each more than once. In 2014, she was awarded the National Book Foundation Medal for Distinguished Contribution to American Letters. Le Guin has resided in Portland, Oregon since 1959.

I loved this book as a kid and still think it's a great, cute little story. The four winged kittens in this book grow up in the city but fly off in order to find some place better. The illustrations are lovely, and cat lovers will enjoy the story.

I bought the book for myself. I have a hard copy, but a while ago I listened to LeGuin's trilogy and fell in love with her voice. For a woman, renowned as one of the greatest adult SciFi/ Fantasy writers in the world, her reading and writing in the Catwing series display her humility. She may rock the Universe with her SciFi/Fantasy, but she isn't afraid to identify with kittens.

I bought this as a gift for my god-daughter, as an accompaniment to a new kitten her parents were giving her. I had read a lot of Ursula le Guin's fiction for adults and loved all of it, so I was interested to see what a 7 year old would make of this.

The answer was simple - she loved it. The beautifully produced box set was a delight to open, and the stories grabbed her attention immediately. It's not often that a book wins out against the other novelties of Christmas day, but this one did. Le Guin is so skilled with language and a feast for the imagination. I am delighted this is so for children as much as for me. I am tempted now to give the Earthsea series to her parents next time round The Earthsea Quartet: "A Wizard Of Earthsea"; "The Tombs of Atuan"; "The Farthest Shore"; "Tehanu" (Puffin Books)
