Under the pen name Lewis Carroll, Charles Lutwidge Dodgson became a legend for his children's books, which broke the constraints of Victorian moralism. Thirty years in the writing and drawn from a voluminous fund of letters and diaries, this exemplary biography conveys both the imaginative fancy and human complexity of the creator of Alice in Wonderland. Morton N. Cohen explores Charles Lutwidge Dodgson, or Lewis Carroll's life from every applicable angle with the exception of the question of his sexuality. He explores the darker side of the man, the mathematical genius, the writer of melancholy poems when growing up, the photographer, the artist, and so many more. I have not read many books about Mr. Carroll for comparison but I can assure you that this is a well-researched, in-depth literary study of one of the most brilliant minds in the history of writing. With drawings, letters, and yes, photography (not necessary but oh well), this book truly knows what it's talking about. Cohen is a true Carroll archivist, perhaps the most definite source on the man. I advise this book to any literature fans or any quick thinkers who may have spotted the logic puzzles or hidden foibles of life that are so frequently reappearing in the Hunting of the Snark, Phantasmagoria, the two Alice books and of course, the assorted verse Mr. Carroll has passed on to us. A marvelous read.

I first picked up this book from the local library as a ninth grader not even particularly fond of the Alice books- I think I just liked the cover. I ended up checking the book out many times afterwards, reading and rereading it. This book is beautifully written, and paints a fair and thorough picture of a quietly tormented genius. I would recommend this book to anyone, not just "Alice" lovers.

I learned a lot about Lewis Carroll from reading this biography. At times, it became a little repetitive, but overall I enjoyed getting to know this author better. It makes all of Lewis Carroll's stories more interesting.

A very thorough, readable biography that leads you to draw your own conclusions about this odd fellow, without having any agenda of its own. Well worth a read if you have an interest in the writer, but maybe not if you don't!

Very comprehensive biography

Everything you ever wanted to know about Charles L. Dodgson, and more. The "more" is Cohen's firm belief that Dodgson was a pedophile, but did not act on his inner desires. He was in all ways a Victorian, a chaste and very gifted genius. The book is extremely well written, well researched, and easy to read. Whether or not one agrees with Cohen's view of Dodgson's inner desires, this book is an outstanding addition for any Lewis Carroll fan, from an author who clearly admires and is sympathetic to his subject.

I couldn't finish this book. the author is infatuated with Lewis Carrol's "genius" and I feel like really glosses over a seriously disturbing relationship he had with young children. Perhaps I am reading too much between the lines but I distinctively got the feeling Lewis was a pedophile and I couldn't enjoy learning more about him once I got that feeling.
Also - the author takes insanely large quotes from Lewis Carrol's journal instead of doing a synopsis. The book could have been much smaller if he knew how to condense. If I wanted to read his journal, I would have tried to buy that instead of looking for a biography. I felt that he also let his own sentences go on forever.
This was immediately donated because I didn't even want it in the house anymore.
