About the Author
Emma Thompson is an Oscar-winning screenwriter and actress who lives in London and Argyll. Her father was Eric Thompson, the man behind The Magic Roundabout, and she remembers him reading Beatrix Potter's tales to her and her sister in his best Dougal voice. "We would always want The Tale of Mr. Tod, which is lengthy and satisfyingly spooky. He would always read The Tale of a Fierce Bad Rabbit, which has about three words on each page. But--thanks to Potter's genius--we were never, ever disappointed."
Eleanor Taylor grew up in Scotland and England, and has a great affinity for the countryside of both places, which is beautifully reflected in the engaging characters and beautiful scenes illustrated in this book.

Emma Thompson is a perfect successor to Beatrix Potter. She has the right mix of whimsy and practicality to carry Peter rabbit along the modern rabbit trail. The story is simple but hilariously serious for poor Peter. As well Emma has the perfect voice to read us the tale. Enjoy.

In The Spirit Of Beatrix Potter ...
Reviewed in the United States on February 2, 2013Verified Purchase
In the spirit of Beatrix Potter, Emma Thompson has given readers "The Further Tale Of Peter Rabbit." Like Beatrix Potter's Peter Rabbit, the hero of Thompson's tale is mischievous and prone to disobeying his mother. Like the classic Peter Rabbit, that character in "The Further Tale Of Peter Rabbit" is clever, resourceful, and quick-witted. Like the classic Peter Rabbit, Emma Thompson's Peter Rabbit learns there are consequences associated with his disobedience.
"The Further Tale Of Peter Rabbit" is nicely illustrated. Without resorting to copying those of Beatrix Potter, Eleanor Taylor's illustrations are still reminiscent of Potter's work The colors are bright; the watercolor style is translucent; and the realism of the art work all serve to enhance Emma Thompson's story. These beautiful illustrations help make this a 5 star book.
"The Further Tale Of Peter Rabbit" is an very enjoyable read-aloud book for parents or grandparents to share at their toddler's bedtime. It is also one that younger readers may enjoy reading to themselves. A CD of "The Further Tale Of Peter Rabbit" which Emma Thompson reads is included with the book. It is a nice touch since beginning readers may use it in conjunction with their learning to read.
You will want to add Emma Thompson's "The Further Tale Of Peter Rabbit" to your child's library. It is a 5 star book.

I'd certainly recommend Peter Rabbit's new story and his new authoress! The drawings are beautiful and I loved the idea of Peter seeking refuge in a VERY big radish and eating out of it!

A Real Gem

Wow! I pre-ordered this special edition box, and what a treat it was when the postman came knocking. Where do I start? It is so special in every way, and as I peeled back the layers of the box, I almost daren't touch, lest I disturbed its presentation! The print on the box and fabric books are incredible and beautifully designed. The texture of which reminds me of my old and well-thumbed 1909 Beatrix Potter books that have been handed down through the family. I really enjoyed reading the preface explaining how and why some of Potter's previously excluded drawings have been added to the newly published original story. Emma Thompson has done an incredible job with the Further Tale. I loved knowing that she wrote it whilst in Scotland, and the letter signed by her is such a lovely touch. The illustrations are so much fun and I think very true to the originals, but with their own special added character. Thank goodness I bought two of these boxes, as I will be keeping one for my family, and the other is to be a Christening present. I feel very proud to put these two special editions along side my old Beatrix Potter books on the bookshelf.

A Delightful Book!
Reviewed in the United States on July 11, 2013Verified Purchase
I purchased this book for my preschool-age daughter after hearing it favorably reviewed on an NPR podcast. It quickly became one of my daughter's favorite books, and it's one that I love reading to her, as well.
The illustrations are beautiful and capture the subtle beauty and imagination of classic Beatrix Potter stories. The narrative is also in keeping with Beatrix Potter's works, although I find Emma Thompson's version to be even more entertaining and endearing.
This book is good literature on a very small, accessible scale--perfect for introducing young children to good, rich books at a young age. The story has a satisfying, cohesive narrative arc and contains a few great moments of irony. Everything about the book is very well done.
And, the accompanying CD in which Emma Thompson reads her story is fantastic! Her beautiful, dynamic narration paired with the delightful background makes this a great bedtime or playtime CD. My daughter loves it.
Overall, this is a very high-quality, sophisticated book for little ones. If you are tired of the silly, zany, vapid stuff that is often marketed to young children today, this is your book! We've also given it as a gift. This will be an enduring favorite of ours.
I hope to see more children's literature from Emma!

A very special edition

I bought this limited edition box set for my daughter. She's only 2.5 at present but I wanted to get something she could treasure in years to come. Emma Thompson has written a delightful little story and the illustrations are in keeping with the style of Beatric Potter and are utterly charming.
The set is beautifully presented initially in a brown box with a numbered sheet on the front which opens to reveal a white cardboard slipcase over a white box that has illustrations of Peter Rabbit across it. Opening the box reveals two cloth bound little books inlaid on a purple inset. The original Peter Rabbit story by Miss Potter on the left and the new book on the right (under which is a small envelope containing a letter signed by Emma).
To the "reviewer" who left one star...please do your research first before critising in future...to give such a low score to a set you don't own or have ordered is neither constructive nor informative.
But back to the set, it may be pricey compared to buying the book on its own but this is an investment piece..hopefully to be passed onto future generations and for that reason, it's highly recommended.
