Purchase options and add-ons
Guy Montag is a fireman. His job is to destroy the most illegal of commodities, the printed book, along with the houses in which they are hidden. Montag never questions the destruction and ruin his actions produce, returning each day to his bland life and wife, Mildred, who spends all day with her television “family.” But when he meets an eccentric young neighbor, Clarisse, who introduces him to a past where people didn’t live in fear and to a present where one sees the world through the ideas in books instead of the mindless chatter of television, Montag begins to question everything he has ever known.

About the author

In a career spanning more than seventy years, Ray Bradbury, who died on June 5, 2012, at the age of 91, inspired generations of readers to dream, think, and create. A prolific author of hundreds of short stories and close to fifty books, as well as numerous poems, essays, operas, plays, teleplays, and screenplays, Bradbury was one of the most celebrated writers of our time. His groundbreaking works include Fahrenheit 451, The Martian Chronicles, The Illustrated Man, Dandelion Wine, and Something Wicked This Way Comes. He wrote the screen play for John Huston's classic film adaptation of Moby Dick, and was nominated for an Academy Award. He adapted sixty-five of his stories for television's The Ray Bradbury Theater, and won an Emmy for his teleplay of The Halloween Tree. He was the recipient of the 2000 National Book Foundation Medal for Distinguished Contribution to American Letters, the 2004 National Medal of Arts, and the 2007 Pulitzer Prize Special Citation, among many honors.
Throughout his life, Bradbury liked to recount the story of meeting a carnival magician, Mr. Electrico, in 1932. At the end of his performance Electrico reached out to the twelve-year-old Bradbury, touched the boy with his sword, and commanded, "Live forever!" Bradbury later said, "I decided that was the greatest idea I had ever heard. I started writing every day. I never stopped."

- Reviewed in Canada on December 2, 2008Verified PurchaseFahrenheit 451 is a wonderful story about a fireman living in a futuristic society where books are banned & censorship is commonplace. Morgan is a firefighter, but not like the ones in our world because instead of putting out fires he is employed to start them for the purpose of burning books. We meet Morgan & are introduced to his job & briefly to him when he meets a young neighbour named Clarisse who is an interesting girl with plenty of questions. Unlike the majority of the people in Morgan's society who merely accept things & practice a superficial happiness filled with odd television shows & games, Clarisse asks plenty of questions.
Morgan's friendship with Clarisse will change his life forever, & perhaps for the better, because one thing is certain from the beginning when we meet Morgan - he's not particularly happy for a guy living in a world that is supposed to be obsessed with happiness.
Bradbury's story explores the society that Morgan is living in & reveals how it's inhabitants came to live in a world where books are banned, questions are frowned upon & superficial happiness is encouraged & formalized in all aspects of the society. Bradbury's novel is incredibly insightful given it's publication date in the early 1950's. It is a commentary on the world we live in that is more obsessed with images, fun & superficiality than it is with exploring ideas, expanding our minds & learning. The novel, whether or intentionally or not, serves as a stark warning to societies, & the people who make up those societies, that place too little importance on knowledge, questioning & reflection.
The novel is short & an incredibly easy read. Bradbury is a wonderful writer who is writing for the reader's enjoyment at least as much to send a message.
- Reviewed in Canada on October 14, 2017Verified PurchaseI decided to order and read this book, even though it is very old, because I kept seeing it on the list of old science fiction books that one should have read! (I'm not sure it really qualifies as "science fiction", but never mind…) There is a great deal about it that has a very dated feel, not surprisingly, but if you suspend disbelief about those things, the underlying message is still pretty valid. Like The Handmaid's Tale and other similar novels of the future going terribly wrong, Fahrenheit 451 holds important existential messages that we should never ignore.
- Reviewed in Canada on December 19, 2023Verified PurchaseBack in Highschool we were assigned this book to read and I loved it. I loved it so much I ordered it to read it again. Definitely a good read! Its very interesting how this book was written is the 1950s, the way it described the world almost felt like it was depicting todays society. It was really eye opening.
- Reviewed in Canada on March 20, 2024Verified PurchaseTimeless classic that continues to provoke thought and reflection. Bradbury's writing is both evocative and poignant, drawing readers into a world where the pursuit of knowledge is seen as subversive. The themes of censorship, conformity, and the importance of individuality resonate strongly, serving as a powerful reminder of the dangers of sacrificing intellectual freedom for the sake of societal conformity. While some aspects of the plot may feel dated, the overarching message of the novel remains relevant and impactful.
- Reviewed in Canada on September 5, 2011Verified PurchaseFahrenheit 451 is a novel ahead of its time. Though it was written in 1950, virtual reality, cyborgs, and computing are covered in surprising ways. The basic storyline is simple: Guy Montag, a "fireman", questions whether burning books is his purpose in life. Unlike 1984, Fahrenheit 451 has the benefit of sounding fresh and relevent to today. Increasing use of television and the internet, shortened attention spans, and the decline of reading lead to rule by soundbyte and videoclips. "Family" are the people seen on wall screens in livingrooms, while the ones we live with are strangers.
While the story is grim at times, I enjoyed reading this book. I like that Bradbury fleshes out his characters by their words, thoughts and actions, and avoids describing them to the reader by simple adjectives. Whether you believe in his imagining of the future or not, this is a book well worth reading, both as entertaining speculative fiction and as a cautionary tale. Recommended.

StellaReviewed in the United Kingdom on January 5, 20255.0 out of 5 stars Thought-provoking classic on censorship
Verified Purchase"Fahrenheit 451" is a thought-provoking read that really makes you think about society and the power of books. The story is set in a future where books are banned, and firemen burn them. It's both gripping and a bit chilling, as it explores themes of censorship and the importance of critical thinking. The characters are compelling, and the writing is vivid. At times, the pacing might feel slow, but it adds to the atmosphere. If you enjoy science fiction with a strong message, this classic is definitely worth checking out.
Arjun RakshitReviewed in India on October 15, 20245.0 out of 5 stars Heading to a dystopian world
Verified PurchaseOne of the most thought provoking books I have read .A book about books, pointing to a dystopian world where books are burnt and people live in bubble chambers bereft of any interaction with the outside world .It is so prescient of the present situation when we are immersed in distractions and are addicted to screentime.(mobile, TV). Reading books creates a world of interacting thinking people, not cast in the same mould. It is to prevent this that books have been burnt since ancient times.
