About the Author

Dr. Jennifer L. Verdolin, an expert in animal behavior, is currently a research scientist affiliated with the National Evolutionary Synthesis Center (Duke University) in Durham, NC, where she studies lemur personality and social behavior. Widely regarded animal behavior scientist, author, and communicator, Jennifer has been a featured guest on BBC Earth Podcast, National Public Radio, and many others. She also had a reoccurring role as radio personality “Dr. Jen” on the nationally syndicated US radio show, “The DL Hughley Show” hosted by American Peabody award winning comedian, D.L. Hughley.

After the publication of her two nonfiction popular science books, Wild Connection and Raised by Animals, Jennifer began using her expertise to contribute wildlife documentaries. From Animals in Love (Oxford Scientific Films) to Spy in the Wild (John Downer Productions), Jennifer has been a consultant and on screen contributor. Aside from being sought after to contribute to media projects, Jennifer is an engaging speaker, delighting audiences with the often hilarious side of human and animal behavior. Her appearances have included places like the world-renowned 92nd St Y in New York City

Currently, Jennifer is an Assistant Professor in the School of Natural Resources and the Environment at the University of Arizona. Her research focuses on social networks and personality of social animals including prairie dogs and lemurs. Delivering science with humor is her specialty whether it’s in print, on the radio, on screen, or in front of an audience. When she’s not teaching students at the University of Arizona, she is usually hiking, taking photos, cooking, or writing her third book.

Though written by a scientist, this book is anything but scientific--and the author is quite clear about that. I heard this book promoted on a BBC Earth podcast and she was so funny that I thought I would read it. Because it is so thin on scientific method, however, it ends up saying nothing really interesting either about animals or humans. The parallels drawn between animal and human behavior are vague and unconvincing and leave HUGE gaps and questions. She simply doesn't go deeply enough into animal behavior to be persuasive. That leaves her with little to conclude about humans, other than to advise humans not to be jerks. I realize the book is not meant to be more than a fun read, but this topic is so innately fascinating that I wish she could have brought more of her specialized knowledge to say something illuminating, beyond obvious and common sense analogies.

It is a biological given that men and women are different. Although advanced thinkers in academia have tried very hard to make the world gender-neutral, a book on human behavior is going to look different if written by a man or a woman. I bought this book to get the female perspective on mammals and their possible ties to specific human behavior. Perhaps that says something about me, but that is what books like this help one explore.

Read this book and learn some insights about animal sexuality, human sexuality, and gender roles. And if you're lucky, maybe there will be an observation that will serve you in your life. We've all had dating disasters, and this book recounts many amusing situations.

This would be an excellent supplementary book for an undergraduate course in animal behavior. It is personal on two levels. First, Verdolin's background as an animal behaviorist gives a unique perspective on modern American human dating habits. And it is sprinkled with anecdotes of dates and relationships, both good and bad, of the author and her friends, that are looked at through the mirror of animal courtship and mating. If I had a small concern, is that the book might appeal most to women under 40. Still, as a nearly 60 year old male, there were more than a few times that I stopped and thought about some aspect of my own long-ago dating history and said to myself: "Oh, that explains it!"
