Product description
From School Library Journal
Grade 6 Up-This story of Alice Liddell and her relationship with Charles Dodgson (Lewis Carroll) and his masterpiece is a busy book. It contains a fictionalized account of how Alice in Wonderland came to be; historical information on childhood life in Victorian England; puzzles and games invented by Dodgson; family trees for Alice, Dodgson, and Queen Victoria; a bibliography; and a walking tour of Oxford. The tone and style of the writing, apparently meant to mimic the literary Alice, give the narrator a distinct voice that is sometimes pleasant and sometimes irritatingly smug. Thus, the book lacks focus. The illustrations are flat and insipid, particularly in contrast to the many photographs throughout the story, most taken by Dodgson. The author is a devotee of Alice in Wonderland and has created a work that will appeal to others with the same passion. It is doubtful that the majority of those readers will be children.

From Kirkus Reviews
The author of Linnea in Monet's Garden (1987) explores the connection between Alice Liddell, the book Alice, and its creator in an inviting array of anecdotes, biographical details, descriptions of the Oxford setting, photos (many by Dodgson, still renowned as a photographer of children), period illustrations, and Eriksson's precisely detailed art. Bjrk introduces this wealth of material with an engaging account (lively with ``conversation'') of Alice's first telling on a river picnic. The bulk of the book details the peculiar ups and downs of the friendship between the child and the confirmed bachelor (whose best friends were always little girls, although there's no hint that these ties were anything but deliciously whimsical and rather cerebral), the two of whom apparently lost interest in each other as she got older (Mrs. Liddell would also, periodically and inexplicably, try to terminate a friendship that would then be reinstated with full honor). Meanwhile, much of the pair's playful interaction (especially concerning logic and numbers) was incorporated into Alice. The author wraps up her account with what happened later to the people, the books, and Oxford itself. Eriksson's profuse, exquisite illustrations are as carefully researched as the text. An entrancing portrait of the genesis of a classic, of a unique friendship, and of Victorian Oxford. Addenda include a map, family lists, puzzle solutions, ``Societies for Alice and Carroll Friends,'' and bibliographies of Dodgson's books and the author's sources. Charming. A wonderful educational book about Alice Liddell and Mr Dodgson
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on December 7, 2020Verified Purchase
I have been meaning to write a review for quite some time and at long last I have gotten around to it. It is as others have said wonderful, fantastic, and enchanting. I have read it more than once but I could read it a thousand times and still love it. You learn where all the inspiration for the Alice books came from, how Alice and Mr Dodgson (better known as Lewis Carroll) first met and became friends, and many other exciting things including going to the Oxford museum where they saw the Remains of the dodo bird. I love the way the book starts with the Golden afternoon on the River during the 4th of July 1862 and then goes back to the Year 1859. Everytime I read the book I feel as if I am right there when all the conversations between the people are going on. It gives a wonderful and accurate portrayal of Alice Liddell and Mr Dodgson's friendship. I would not recommend reading this book to anyone below the age of 12 as it has been rated ages 12 and up. There are many books out there about Alice and Mr Dodgson but none as great as this one. I read the whole thing in one week. The book may have been expensive but it was worth the money. I recommend ordering this book from Ultimate Treasures as it has the best rating of 97%. Or you could try ordering it from Hodges and figgis. One final thing I would like to add is the way the woman who wrote the book says in the forward page we can't be sure exactly what everything was like or just how it happened as we weren't there that's why our story is a mish mash Of what we know was said what did happen and probably could have happened. It also says where all the resources of information came from. A lot of hard work went into researching the book.

A delight

This is a beautifully produced book and a delight to read. The illustrations are charming and every page is a pleasure to behold . The text itself is whimsical in a way which chimes perfectly with the subject and leaves one with that bitter-sweet realisation of how brief is the fleeting magic of childhood .

Not 'Very Good' Condition
Reviewed in the United States on August 18, 2022Verified Purchase
Item says 'very good condition,' this is not the case. At best I would rate it as 'good' condition. Cover is ripped all over; it's dirty; and written in. It's definitely way over priced for this condition. I would not recommend this book; I'd buy elsewhere for better quality and cheaper price.

Merveilleux livre, très original, avec de très beaux dessins qui illustrent la vie à l’époque de Lewis Carroll. Un vrai conte de fées. Je recommande vivement!
