Michelle Branch
Amazon.ca
"So I'm a little left of center, I'm a little out of tune," sings Michelle Branch on her debut album's "You Get Me." Well, maybe. Branch offers a well-produced pastiche of chiming and strumming guitars, hip-hop-lite beats, quiet-verse-to-louder-chorus templates, and positive thinking. At her best--"If She Only Knew," a propulsive love note to an ex--she rivals the likes of Sixpence None the Richer as likable radio-aimed fare. Catchy and self-expressive while breaking absolutely no ground, Branch also echoes everyone from label-mate Alanis Morissette to the solo Belinda Carlisle. She dies just a little in this crazy mixed-up world, escapes to her secret garden for sunshine in the pouring rain, and ultimately finds her reflection getting clearer. The Spirit Room could be the next bit of pop philosophy to dazzle mainstream audiences. --Rickey Wright

Everywhere- 9.5/10 This song reminds me so much of Breathe on Hotel Paper! It's fast and fun. Michelle's voice is amazing on this song. She definitely has control. And the lyrics are great. This song has definitely grown on me, but still my least favorite single of hers. Too overplayed, yet very very good.
You Get Me- 9.5/10 This song has definitely grown on me since I've listened to it more. I used to get bored with it after hearing it alot, but now I find it to be cute and catchy with powerful lyrics. It's a happy song. Her voice is sort of young and carefree. And it definitely deserves it's spot on this album. One of my least favorites, though.
All You Wanted- 10/10 This is a single that no one should ever get tired of. One of the best tracks on the album and a gem. Michelle's voice sparkles in this song and the lyrics are great! Even if you have heard this song a million times, it never gets old. This is her 2nd best single ever! One to hold on to.
You Set Me Free- 10/10. A beautiful song with very inspiring lyrics. When I heard this on commercials for "Spirit" I just knew I'd love this song. Very refreshing. One you can't miss. I don't know why many people dislike this song- it's a breath of fresh air.
Something To Sleep To- 10/10 This is another favorite of mine. A ballad, but beautiful. Like "Set Me Free" I don't understand why people dislike this one. The end is especially powerful. Michelle's voice shines and takes over. Beautiful.
Here With Me- 10/10 A fast song about forgiveness. The tune is a bit haunting, but it flows very well with the words and vocals. Michelle definitely chose well by putting this amazing song on the album. It's one of my favorites, but I got it confused with "I'd Rather Be In Love" at first.
Sweet Misery- 9/10 A sort of new age song with short lyrics. Good, but not really my thing. It's way too short and slow. I like the chorus, but the rest is sort of boring. The lyrics are bit boring, also. Just not doing much for me.
If Only She Knew- 10/10 A great song! I like the country beat and it is one of the best on the cd. It sort of reminds me of something that would fit better on Hotel Paper, rather than the Spirit Room. They should switch this one with Find Your Way Back, a much poppier song. Very fast and upbeat- fun to dance to.
I'd Rather Be In Love- 10/10 A totally happy song. It talks about how love is a beautiful thing and how everyone should stay by their loved one's side instead of being alone or not admitting the truth. Beautiful! One of my favorites.
Goodbye To You- 20/10 My personal favorite. Sad and a ballad, but very touching and strong. I'm glad it's a single. It's very slow, but it will keep you pushing the back button on your CD player for hours. I'm a ballad fan- this one made me cry!
Drop In The Ocean- 8/10 This song has grown on me. I used to hate it, but now I sort of like it. I really like the words. The tune is tolerable. It sounds like a remix of something, though. It's acceptable.
If you are just buying this CD now, listen to tracks 4, 5, 8, and 10 first (unless you haven't heard 3, which you probably have, then you should listen to that too) if you want to like Michelle. You will learn her voice is great, her guitar talent is amazing, and she is one of the best pop singers I know of. Well done, Michelle. And be sure to check out her other CD, Hotel Paper, which is very different from this album, but totally worth the money. Both CD's are some of the best I've purchased, so be a smart album collecter and pick up some copies.
1.) "Everywhere"=10/10~When I had first heard of Michelle Branch, this was the song that was playing. It has a very catchy feel to it and I'm glad she made it the first song on her album.
2.) "You Get Me"=8/10~This song took a little bit of getting used to at first, but now I love it. I especially like the first lines of it: "...So I'm a little left of center/I'm a little out of tune..." I can definitely relate to that...^^
3.) "All You Wanted"=11/10~I LOVE THIS SONG!!! It is my absolute favorite! Every time I listen to it, I feel like my ears are getting therapy...To me, this song is the sole representation of an actual spirit room paradise..."...If you want to/I can save you/I can take you away from here..."
4.) "You Set Me Free"=9/10~This is another nice, lil' ballad. The only reason why I gave it only nine points is because it is a follow-up to my fave. song in the whole, wide world...:)
5.) "Something To Sleep To"=10/10~For some reason, every time I hear this song, I think of London, where the sky is grey and fog is scattered about the area. The scene is entirely black and white. (I know that's not how London really is, but my imagination isn't always correct---and that's what I like about it...^^) Some of the fog clears away, and out of the cool mist appears a woman under a streetlight. Her face bears a ridiculous about of stage makeup and her hair is adorned with whimsical curls. There, she narrates a peculiar, lil' story under the mysterious expression of a damsel in distress: "...She's his yellow brick road/Leading him on/And letting him go as far as she lets him go/Going down to nowhere..."
6.) "Here With Me"=8/10~This song seems more like a filler than a hit single, but it's still a fairly adequate love song.
7.) "Sweet Misery"=9/10~When I first saw this title on the back cover, I didn't know what to expect. I mean, would it be a happy song or a sad song? Discovering it was another happy, love song, I gave it only nine points; for, I believe that variety is the spice of life.
8.) "If Only She Knew"=10/10~Now, this song exerts a little more variety to the album. It is happy, yet stylish at the same time. ---And that's what makes this piece original. I especially like the low guitar acoustics right before the chorus---("...I try to help you out through the hardest of times/Your heart is in your throat/And I'm speaking my mind/Though it looks as if it's over/I'm still not over you...")
9.) "I'd Rather Be In Love"=9/10~Another filler, but still fairly adequate love song.
10.) "Goodbye To You"=10/10~While other people think this song is annoyingly whiny, I think it is, well, beautiful. But then again, I am usually biased towards black and blue songs...:)
11.) "A Drop In The Ocean"=10/10~In my opinion, this song is original because it's not just another love song...Well, I mean, it is a love song, (not that I have a problem with love songs or anything,) but it has a unique tint to it---sounds of the ocean. I thought that was pretty creative. Plus, it could make an enjoyable hymn to beach-lovers, like me!
All in all, this CD was TIGHT!!! Hopefully, all who listen to it will have the same awesome experience I did---escaping from their usual, boring worlds and embarking on an exhilarating journey to The Spirit Room.

If the Studio she had a recording contract with would have Left her alone to make her music without their interference she could have easily been as Big as Avril Lavigne.
She lost 12 years worth of Albums because of her dispute with her Label.
I started watching Empty-Vee in the hopes of finding out more. After a few days, they finally showed a music video. Luckily, it happened to be for Michelle's song, "All You Wanted." I liked that, too, so I ordered the album.
She is very talented, with a pleasing voice. The songs are well crafted and enjoyable. It isn't as thoughty as Peter Gabriel, but it's much more intelligent than all of that modern aggressively cheerful music performed by people chosen for their ability to dance.
The only reason I didn't give it five stars is a matter of personal taste. I have a sensitive ear for pronunciation (lots of speech therapy to clear up a stammer), and a whole album of someone ending almost every word with a vowel (whether there's one there or not) got slightly irritating. I guess it's her Canadian background. I understand that they have funny accents in Canadia. Still, it sounds better than these low rent, white ... Oklahoma red neck accents I am surrounded with every day.
