A Note from the Author
As a boy, my mother continued to talk to me about my attitude and began to make an impression. She didn’t lecture because she was discovering more subtle ways to encourage me. She memorized poems and famous sayings and kept quoting them to me.
Thinking about it now, Mother was incredible, memorizing long poems like Robert Frost’s “The Road Not Taken.” She often quoted to me a poem called “You Have Yourself to Blame” — a poem I’ve never been able to find in print. But it’s about people offering excuses for failing to do their best. The bottom line was that we have only ourselves to blame. We create our own destiny by the way we do things. We have to take advantage of opportunities and be responsible for our choices.
Mother stayed on me until I fully grasped that I am the one ultimately responsible for my life. I had to take charge if I wanted to amount to anything.
—Dr. Ben Carson

From the Publisher
In 1987, Dr. Benjamin Carson gained worldwide recognition for his part in the first successful separation of Siamese twins joined at the back of the head. The extremely complex and delicate operation, five months in the planning and twenty-two hours in the execution, involved a surgical plan that Carson helped initiate.
Carson pioneered again in a rare procedure known as hemispherectomy, giving children without hope a second chance at life through a daring operation in which he literally removed one half of their brain.
But such breakthroughs aren't unusual for Ben Carson. He's been beating the odds since he was a child.
Raised in inner-city Detroit by a mother with a third grade education, Ben lacked motivation. He had terrible grades. And a pathological temper threatened to put him in jail. But Sonya Carson convinced her son that he could make something of his life, even though everything around him said otherwise.
Trust in God, a relentless belief in his own capabilities, and sheer determination catapulted Ben from failing grades to the top of his class--and beyond to a Yale scholarship . . . the University of Michigan Medical School . . . and finally, at age 33, the directorship of pediatric neurosurgery at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland. Today, Dr. Ben Carson holds twenty honorary doctorates and is the possessor of a long string of honors and awards, including the Horatio Alger Award, induction into the "Great Blacks in Wax" Museum in Baltimore, Maryland, and an invitation as Keynote Speaker at the 1997 President's National Prayer Breakfast.
Gifted Hands is the riveting story of one man's secret for success, tested against daunting odds and driven by an incredible mindset that dares to take risks. This inspiring autobiography takes you into the operating room to witness surgeries that made headlines around the world--and into the private mind of a compassionate, God-fearing physician who lives to help others. Through it all shines a humility, quick wit, and down-to-earth style that make this book one you won't easily forget. Dr. Benjamin Carson is director of pediatric neurosurgery at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore. He lives with his wife, Candy, and three sons in West Friendship, Maryland.

About the authors

Hello! My name is Cecil Murphey, but everyone just calls me 'Cec.'
I've written dozens of books on a variety of topics with an emphasis on Spiritual Growth, Christian Living, Caregiving, and Recovery. In these books, I share my personal experiences as I strive to be closer to God and to seek his will for me.
My passion is to stimulate people's minds and nourish their souls. Since 1984, I've used my writing to help me accomplish those goals. My first book came off the press in 1975. To date I've published more than 135 books and hundreds of articles.
When I write, I have the opportunity to share my faith and my spiritual growth with others. My nonfiction books are based on my personal experiences, experiences that have been enhanced and developed by meeting people just like you.
As a ghostwriter, I sometimes take other people's materials and write books for them. Some carried my name and others did not. (Ghostwriters are often noted with the word 'with' below the author's name.) Why do I ghostwrite? It's rewarding for me to help others tell their stories of inspiration and growth. For example, when I see and hear from readers of 90 Minutes in Heaven and they describe the peace they now have after losing a loved one, I'm gratified to be a part of telling that story.
I've had the opportunity to be a caregiver and work with a number of other caregivers for their loved ones. It's a difficult, but rewarding commitment. When you're dealing with challenges of Alzheimer's Disease, depression, or substance abuse in your family, it can be a time that stretches you personally and tries your faith.
Stop by my web site. Drop me an e-mail. I'd love to hear from you.

The driving force in Ben's life was his single mother, Sonya, who often worked three jobs as a maid to make ends meet for Ben and his older brother Curtis. To make things even more challenging, she had to leave the boys with friends and relatives from time to time to obtain psychiatric treatment.
Married at 13 with only a third grade education, Sonya was an intelligent woman with strong Christian values. She knew that education was the key to success for Ben and Curtis so she shut off the television and made them hit the books - books she could scarcely read herself. Sonia was a tough taskmaster -- the boys were allowed to watch only two hours of TV a week. She also required them to read two books weekly and provide her with book reports.
For a time in middle school, Ben had the lowest grades in his class and lacked belief that he could master the work. Worse still for his self confidence, he was mocked by his white classmates and even some of his teachers. But this soon changed. Over time with Sonia's support and encouragement, young Ben's school work began to catch up with and surpass that of his classmates changing his self image and view of the world. He began to think he wanted to become a doctor.
Due to his outstanding academic achievements and his high SAT scores, Ben was sought out by the best schools in the country. He finally chose Yale University, where he received a full academic scholarship. While at Yale, Ben met Candy who eventually became his wife and life-long partner.
Ben went on to medical school at Michigan State, which was close to home and affordable. During his time in medical school, the interns and residents recognized Ben's obvious knowledge and talents and relied on him to help them carry out their duties. However, Ben's interest in neurosurgery. and concerns about the future of the MS medical school, led him to apply to Johns Hopkins to complete his medical school training. Acceptance at this world-class teaching hospital was a huge step for Ben and it opened the door for his subsequent success.
Ultimately, at the age of thirty-three, Ben became Chief of Pediatric Surgery at John's Hopkins. In this capacity, he developed many medical innovations and performed, and led teams in, ground-breaking surgeries. One of the most celebrated of these was the successful separation of the co-joined Binder twins - a delicate 22-hour procedure involving a team of 70 medical professionals. Ben's other surgical innovations included the first intra-uterine procedure to relieve pressure on the brain of a hydro cephalic fetal twin, and a hemispherectomy, in which an infant suffering from uncontrollable seizures has half of its brain removed.
Given his strong Christian beliefs, I was not surprised to learn that Ben relies on prayer when facing the most difficult surgical challenges.
In addition to his medical practice, Dr Carson is the author of several books and is in constant demand as a public speaker. In 2008, he received the Presidential Medal of Freedom, America's highest civilian honor. His is an inspirational life story of overcoming obstacles and keeping a positive, hopeful outlook . One can only hope that it leads to greater involvement in public life.

Also the importance of God in ones life cannot be overemphasized enough in the book. Great read....
I was a little disappointed when I received the book and it was damaged. The one corner had been pushed up along the bind of the book and ripped. It's disappointing as a reader to receive a book that isn't in its perfect state. Better packaging techniques or distribution needs to be implemented. I have a feeling it wasn't the packaging but before the book was placed in the package.
