Watching the Wire is akin to reading one of those enormous 19th century Russian novels with maps and a fold-out genealogy of the characters. It could as well be titled Crime and Punishment.
The series gradually builds up a portrait of a whole society, through a huge cast of engaging characers tragically linked by drugs and corruption, from the police, public housing projects and street corner drug society, through declining industrial unions and international smuggling, developers, city and state politics, the school system, and the media. The lines between reality and fiction are blurred: some of the characters are played by professional actors, but others are played by non-actors who come from the character's milieu. Baltimore, Maryland = "Bodymore, Mudderland" (graffiti)= the USA and perhaps all of western society. As in Conrad's Heart of Darkness, we are all implicated in the killing trade at the heart of this society, whether we know it or not.
One of the most corrupt continuing characters, Sen. Clay "Sheee-it" Davis, carries one of Aeschylus's plays with him into the courtroom, and there is a strong tinge of classical tragedy in the series' story arcs. No-one is fully in charge of his or her own fate and the laughter of the gods abounds: the gay gunslinger Omar Little, who has avoided death at the hands of professional hit-men like a cat with nine lives, is killed by a child with a gun, and we recall the scene in which neighbourhood children play at being Omar.
Is there hope in this series? A gangster's promising son is taken in by a retired policeman, Bunny Colvin, one of the clearest and most original thinkers among the characters, who has twice been thwarted in achieving real change on a larger level. If there is hope, it rests in caring relationships, especially with the next generation. This is not an easy answer, either: at least three other characters, Sgt. Ellis Carver, former gangster Dennis "Cutty" Wise and teacher Roland "Prez" Pryzbylewski, try very hard to save young people from the corner life, and are ultimately frustrated. Perhaps that's why several of the series' actors joined together afterwards to develop an arts program for Baltimore street youth.
The Wire has justifiably been called the best series ever made. It is addictive in its own right, and like classical tragedy, it will make you feel pity and fear. It will also make you laugh and think. Well worth the investment in time and money.

I watched The Wire when it was on TV, bought the DVDs (no Bluray at the time) when they were available, and just recently bought this BluRay box set to revisit the entire series in a few binge sessions. And a few sessions will be needed as there's 20 BluRays to go through! Not just the episodes, which are nicely presented and in excellent video quality, but the additional content including prequels, all of which add depth to the series.
The Wire was a shift in television series because of the way it viewed the subject: it was "nitty-gritty" in the real sense. You felt immersed in the story, but not always happy about it. It was raw, rough, and brutal, on both the side of the law and the other side, but that's what held the attraction. This wasn't "nice" television, it was, more than anything "reality" television! This isn't trivial TV with a small handful of leads, but a huge cast of characters, and keeping the story lines apart and understood is an effort in the early episodes. But that was part of the attraction for me: this wasn't typical TV light fare, but a deep, brooding, brutal view that both shocked and fascinated. And some of the characters in the series became legend.
I managed to purchase this box on sale, but that was just lucky timing as I wanted to get the series anyway. Even not on sale, this is worth every penny. This is television history, and it's fascinating.

Excited to purchase the complete series in one go. Due to limited selection in my town I'm glad I found it. Some slight damage and scuffs due to shipping and handling but the discs were intact.

"Also, I do want to point out that a blu-ray version of this show is unlikely." - Reviewer Gregory Fenton, 2012
And here we are in 2015. The Wire is out on Blu-ray which is a good thing as equally as it is a bad thing. The Wire itself is one of the best, if not The Best, series to come to televison so far. It is #1 on EW's list of best series of all time (even though time has not ended yet). If you have not seen the show do yourself a favour and get it. But here's the rub: is Blu-ray the way to go or regular DVD?
I first watched the entire series on DVD. Even though the most of the series was framed for 16:9 (widescreen) it was all originally aired as 4:3. This gives the show, watching it today, a certain rawness to it considering the decade The Wire takes place in as well as it's location in the ghetto of Baltimore. I personally would recommend watching it this way.
The reason for Blu-ray would be for the extra extras (if you're into that sort of thing) and perhaps the DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 mix. Clarity in picture quality may come into play too but I don't see a huge difference in that regard. It is nice however, that the picture fills up the HD display now.
My recommendation is rent/borrow the original DVDs, or catch the original series on an HBO marathon (HBO did recently air the entire series in HD prior to the Blu-ray release as well) or something and then buy the Blu-ray version for prosperity.

BEST SERIES EVER!!!!....
Reviewed in the United States on November 28, 2023Verified Purchase
The most exceptional show to date. Arguably one of the greatest shows ever created, depending on one's perspective. For those who consider Breaking Bad to be the epitome of television, I implore you to experience The Wire. It surpasses expectations, although its profound allure may not be immediately apparent. Treat it as you would a Balzac novel, and you will uncover its true brilliance. The writing, logic, plot intricacies, expansive character development - they all outshine the majority, if not all, of other shows. Like a true masterpiece, it possesses multiple layers that unravel over time. Each viewing reveals new nuances and depths.
It may not appeal to those who seek a formulaic series. Each episode is ingeniously structured, while every season possesses its own distinctive rhythm and conclusion. You will traverse the drug trade, exploring its presence on the streets, in the docks, education system, political arena, and through the lens of the media. The stories unfold before you, featuring drug dealers, law enforcement officers, corrupt officials, politicians, educators, students, addicts, athletes, strippers, thieves, and parents.

A brilliant expose of power and politics in policing in US. Not being American, I find English subtitles essential, but oh so worth the effort.
