Cable Matters SuperSpeed USB 3.0 Type A Male to Female Active Extension Cable 10 Meters/32.8 Feet

If you get a good one, it works well - impressive speed over such a long cable. Even with a 10-15ft passive extension on the device end. Built solidly, it has good "heft".

BUT, USB 3.0 itself seems to be very finicky about many things, so different combinations produce different results. What I mean is that a given cable may work on one Motherboard port at the highest speed, but on another port on the same motherboard, it may fall back all the way to USB 2.0 speeds, or somewhere in-between. Details at end.

NET: 2 of these 10m active cables BEHAVED DIFFERENTLY, when tested on *EVERY* USB 3.0 port that I have, including 2 Motherboard headers (with adapters). While BOTH could go at the highest speed on some ports, on other ports, one cable would fall back to slower speeds. I tested with & without power, with 3 different adapters for the motherboard headers (one adapter had one bad port which never got above USB 2.0 speeds: TEST TEST TEST!), and 2 different passive extension cables added to both ends - a lot of combinations.

MOST interestingly, the ports on the back of the motherboard were worse than using the Motherboard headers!

CONCLUSION: Works well, but MAKE SURE YOU TEST *YOUR* setup!

RESULTS
Gigabyte Z170 Gaming Motherboard, Windows 10 x64, as of ~Nov 28, 2015 (ie latest drivers, etc. as of that date). Device was a USB 3.0 flash drive (128GB PNY), which tops out on reads at about 160Mbps. So these results are based on a max of 160Mbps.
Notes:
"10'" "15'" = 10 or 15 foot PASSIVE USB 3.0 extension cable
"@XXX" = @Mbps (i.e. @160 means it read at 160 Mbps)
"Active + 15' " = Active cable with 15' passive cable added to the Device end (not Host end)
"pwr" means a power adapter was used on the active extension. If not included, it means the behavior was the same with & without the power adapter. (the active cable draws power for its amp from the USB power supplied by the host. The adapter should only be needed to support power-hungry devices like a hard drive, hub, etc.)

YMMV, even with the same motherboard, active, and passive cables - hence my tests and this review. And yes, some of the tests don't make sense! TEST TEST TEST!!!

I have many of these cables and prefer them over any other USB 3.0 active cable. Currently using 5 of them for my home Oculus Rift setup.
One for the HMD and one for each of the sensors.

Out of the dozen cables I've purchased over time only one has ever had problems and Cable Matters was quick to send me out a new cable.

This works, but there is a big caveat. With USB, there is a limit to the number of 'hubs' you can daisy-chain, and active USB cables are essentially cables with a bus-powered hub in the middle to 'repeat' the signal. Well, each of these cables counts as *two* hubs, not one. That can make things a bit tricky if, like me, you wanted to daisy chain more than one of these cables. Two is the limit!

The instructions on the box says, "USB Specifications limit the length of passive USB cables to a maximum of 5 meters. This active cable features a built in chipset which boosts the USB signal... up to 10 meters. By connecting an additional 10 meter active extension cable, you can extend your USB device up to 20 meters." This built in passive cable chipset does not seem to need any active external power source to successfully boost the signal the small amount needed for my application to work perfectly at a 10 meter distance without any external power source requirement. The chipset is physically located in a plastic "torpedo" located on the cable at the 5 meter mark and this plastic torpedo on the cable can be seen by looking very carefully at the product's photo. As you can probably imagine, I am very happy that the chipset provides enough passive boost for my application to work perfectly at 10 meters without my needing any external power. For users that need to connect a "high consumption" device, there is an optional external power input included near the female end of the cable but I haven't needed to use this feature yet. The cable seems quite heavy duty and durable and it definitely does not have a "flimsy feel" to it. The whole setup works fantastic for me so far without any significant signal loss and I am very happy and pleased with it. If I ever experience any future problems with my particular use of the cable, I intend to return here and update this review. Thanks.

As far as I can tell, this is working great! I've got it between my computer -> this cable -> another 15' USB cable -> powered hub, and everything works properly. I can't judge speeds because I don't have anything fast enough, but Windows seems happy. With a powered hub on the far end, I expect no trouble. This is a fairly thin cable, too. It's not unusually thin, but long cables get pretty thick. It's narrower than a standard HDMI cable, and more flexible, if that helps. If you need to add power, the power plug is in the "head" of the cable, so the end that's not at your computer, which may or may not be convenient.
