The Perks of Being a Wallflower is based on the wildly popular novel by Stephen Chbosky about a freshman named Charlie (Logan Lerman) who is always watching from the sidelines until two charismatic seniors take him under their wing. Beautiful, free-spirited Sam (Emma Watson) and her fearless stepbrother Patrick (Ezra Miller) shepherd Charlie through new friendships, first love, burgeoning sexuality, bacchanalian parties, midnight screenings of the Rocky Horror Picture Show and the quest for the perfect song. Set on an island off the coast of New England in the summer of 1965, Moonrise Kingdom tells the story of two twelve-year-olds who fall in love, make a secret pact, and run away together into the wilderness. Inspired by a true story, 50/50 is an original story about friendship, love, survival and finding humor in unlikely places. Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Seth Rogen star as best friends whose lives are changed by a cancer diagnosis in this new comedy directed by Jonathan Levine from a script by Will Reiser. 50/50 is the story of a guy's transformative and, yes, sometimes funny journey to health - drawing its emotional core from Will Reiser's own experience with cancer and reminding us that friendship and love, no matter what bizarre turns they take, are the greatest healers.

This is a strange combination of movies. Perks of Being a Wallflower won multiple awards, and it is easy to see why -- solid performances, strong direction of a strong script. It earns a 5/5. 50/50 was a pleasant surprise. I don't recall it getting much word of mouth, but it probably should have. Although the script is not as solid as Wallflower's, the performances carry it to a soft 5/5 as well. Then there's that other thing. Moonrise Kingdom is stylish; the design elements are worthy of note. But the script? The uneven performances? The stomach-turning scene with pre-teens making out and feeling each other up? I hesitate to even give it half of a star for the visual aspects. Why is it in there with two strong films? I would recommend buying this set for the two films, and throw the other disc out -- that's what I'm doing.
