I purchased this as a backup storage companion to the data on my desktop and have been extremely pleased with it.

This external drive is very compact and only requires a single USB slot to power it. This means that you can pretty much plug and play it with any computer in the world. Speeds are as good as any internal hard drive and when reading/copying larger files, the sequential read speeds of 110MB/s are much faster than the USB 3.0 flash drives that I have lying around.

In addition, for those using Apple computers, I would recommend you format it to exFAT to allow writes to it. exFAT can be written to by both Windows and Apple computers, but the standard NTFS file system that the drive comes with will only allow Windows systems to write to the drive as Apple computers do not natively support it without third party software.

Not much more to be said. It works, and it works well.

Bought this as a backup drive for my son's Dell XPS. Worked like a charm.

Originally bought a Seagate Backup Plus 1 TB. The Dell wouldn't even recognize it, and then it would show up after 2 or 3 minutes in "Computer", but then the backup program wouldn't see it. Tried to run Seagate diagnostic tools - they could detect the device but couldn't run any tests - all would FAIL after a few minutes. Plugged the Seagate into my Mac - no problems. Formatted it for OSX and now its golden.

Thought the problem might somehow be the Dell (made no sense since every other device worked on that USB bus) so ordered the WD drive. Didn't use the WD software - just Win10 backup. Piece of cake.

I bought this a few years ago and it has always worked flawlessly. At 2TB there is still lots of storage. I use as a time-machine backup for MacBook Pro and also add folders of photos, business and reference files. It was slightly more expensive than some similar drives but when compared to a cheaper one I own, you can easily tell, it has much better materials and construction

If you're just going to us this drive to copy, store or sync (with a 3rd party app) files, it works perfectly and does exactly what I bought it for. If you want to be able to use the software that comes with the drive, you may need an OS newer than XP or a different drive.

I dropped 1 star because at one time WD used to include a decent carrying case for for their drives. Now they include strictly the drive and USB cable.

Bottom line: excellent price and the drive does what I need it to do.

I am still using my 2 TB Passport from 2012. Never had an issue with disk corruption, nor disk failure. I needed some more disk space... I'm sticking with WD. From my tests with ATTO Disk Benchmark v2.46, I get a 100MB/s read-write disk transfer in USB3, which I find very good for a mechanical hard disk, even more through USB. In all the drives I have tested, only an SSD goes faster.
An important note. The USB interface IS the disk's interface. There is no SATA-USB adapter as with many 2.5" external HD. So you can not take the HD out of the case and use it as a sata HD in your laptop or elsewhere.

As for the product itself, i have a late 2009 mac mini that was still on OS Lion( i know late upgrader kinda gal ;-) ) and i needed to upgrade my OS because my Safari and Google Chrome was beginning to tell me my browsers where no longer going to be supported etc. My reading of the so many positive reviews on this one made me choose it and i do not regret it. I did not have to download anything to get it working for my Mac. I used Time Machine to do it with the help of YouTube videos lolll and everything in my Mac was saved properly on my WD Passport Ultra. Mariejo

Pour ce qui est du produit, avec tout les lectures positives que j'ai lu ici et là, j'ai décidée de choisir ce modèle plutôt qu'un autre pour faire le back-up de mon Mac Mini 2009. Pas eu besoin de rien faire d'autres que brancher mon WD Passport Ultra 1 TB dans mon Mac Mini et utiliser mon Time Machine avec l'aide de Youtube pour me montrer comment faire ( j'avais jamais faite un back-up moi-même de mon ordi loll )

La marca Western Digital en general es muy buena en lo que respeta a almacenamiento. Este producto en la versión de 1GB lo compró anteriormente un familiar, es gratificante que exite software adicional para el producto que le ayuda a explotar todo su potencial. Si bien este disco duro puede ser usado como un almacenamiento tradicional, las herramientas de WD hacen la vida más fácil en general.

Adicionalmente, tengo entendido que el soporte de la empresa es bueno. Los manuales y la documentación son muy buenos y son fáciles de encontrar. No estoy muy seguro de como se compara con sus competidores respecto al precio, pero la calidad y durabilidad del producto hacen que valga la pena. No te recomiendo ir por las opciones baratas si quieres algo de gran durabilidad. Recomiendo la marca y recomiendo el producto.

I bought this just under a year ago for my research, as I would be traveling and taking videos - large files that needed lots of backup. Despite getting bumped around in my bag a fair bit, this has stood up well to my moves and last better than any portable hard drive I've had to date. The small physical size makes it easy to travel with, which is a huge plus for me, and the large storage capacity meant I could take reminders of home while also saving my research. All in all, a good product at a decent price.

This backup drive does exactly what it says. No complaints, Perfectly satisfied, though it may not be as fast as advertised on some systems, including mine.

On my computer, which is a 2014 era 1.86Ghz ASUS with 4Gb Ram, the process is a bit slow, even on a USB 3.0 slot. I used the included software to backup about 45 Gigs of documents, photos, and music for an initial trial. It took about 90 minutes for 45 Gigs. That's about 1 Gig per two minutes, far from what some users report at 5 Gigs per second. This was on a USB 3.0 slot. So, just to warn you ahead of time, it may be pretty slow on low performance computers. Especially for large back ups.

You can schedule backups hourly, daily, weekly, or monthly automatically, and the backup software that is included in this drive will update any information you've saved on your computer's hard drive in that span of time. This is really convenient for me as a writer. I don't have to manually back up my files anymore. If I've been working on a long file like a book for over a month, I can back up my whole document on the first backup, and then it will back up just the part I've written since the last backup, in subsequent backups. For instance, I did my second backup today, and it was just 13 Megs of information that I've added since my initial 45 Gig first backup. This second backup took about 40 minutes total. Backing up information can be done in the background if you want to work on other things while it is taking place, which makes the included software convenient. Just click one button for each subsequent backup, or if you have the Western Digital drive attached, it will backup at the specified hour, day, week, or month that you want to backup, automatically, with no click of a button..

You can initially choose which file paths and folders you want to backup. You don't have to back up your computer's whole hard drive in automatic backups. In my case, I chose just Documents, Photos, and Music.

As other users have hinted, the files are backed up on the Western Digital drive in a special file format with different file extensions than the source file on your hard drive. They appear in a "bin" folder on the Western Digital hard drive. Though not that obvious, they are still easy to find. Restoring backed up data is basically one click of a button as well, using the software included. I have not tried restoring data as yet.

However, if you would rather back up your files manually and exactly as they are on your computer's hard drive (same file names and extensions, etc.), you can do so just as easily as with any other USB drive. Simply copy the files directly to the Western Digital hard drive using your Windows File Explorer, like you would with any USB drive. Just out of curiosity, I copied my 45 Gigs of files manually a second time, not using the Western Digital backup software, but Windows file explorer instead. The process was painless and easy since Western Digital drive is formatted in NTFS, just like most computer hard drives. It only took 2 minutes for my computer to copy 45 Gigs of files directly to the Western Digital drive using Windows copy feature rather than Western Digital's software. This was on a USB 3.0 slot.

So, it easy to use this drive with the included software, or just as a supplemental hard drive saving to it like you would any USB drive.
